If you mean is it possible to upgrade a revenue ticket using AsiaMiles and but still earn miles for the revenue class on AAdvantage, then yes.

If you mean is it possible to upgrade a ticket bought witth Aadvantage miles using AsiaMiles, then I believe the answer is no.

option one, good to know - i was actually skeptical of this being allowed...but I'm (obviously) glad it is.

thanks for the quick response!

Definitely possible. I've done that dozens of times. Just make sure that when the MPC/AM record locator for the upgrade gets linked to the underlying revenue reservation, the upgrade record locator doesn't "lose" your AA number when switching the locator from the revenue reservation to the upgrade record locator. The way to do this effectively is when you check in to put your AA card in their face and force them to reissue you a BP with the AA number on it. Otherwise, your AA number may be "lost in space" and you'll not get mileage credit, and will have to submit the paperwork later. Save yourself the trouble.
