I will be in SAT for a convention 3/8 to 3/11. I am having problems getting a car so I was planning on taking a taxi. I am staying in downtown SAT along the riverwalk. Most days and evenings are occupied with convention events however, I have Saturday, most of Sunday open. Should I get a car to see some sights outside of the riverwalk area or are most things worth seeing in the downtown area?

Other than the shuttle from the airport (Why taxi?) and the Via bus to the Mercado, everything downtown is walkable and almost everything for that short visit is Downtown.
The hotel at which you're staying makes some difference (as a matter of location). Robert E. Lee, Wm. Sherman, Custer, Pershing, Ike & Patton (along with T. R. who used the bar, still the same, to recruit the Rough Riders) stayed at the Menger, but it's a bit fusty. The Alamo, comparable to the Church of the Holy Sepulcher, the Kaaba at Mecca and other similarly venerated shrines in the eyes of various breeds of the "Faithful", is far smaller in real life than in pictures, but no less woth a visit. Be sure and remove your hat, lest you arouse the ire of the keepers or other visitors, especially the descendants of those who were there.
Were I going to the missions, I might rent a car (or to Fredericksburg/Luckenbach, certainly).
Go to some SAT websites and pull a map of the Riverwalk and the Mercado. Few cities offer as much "convenience" for ambulatory sightseeing as does San Antonio, much to see and easy to see most all of it.
You can keep yourself busy walking around for a full day in dowtown San Antonio and the riverwalk. The missions, amusement parks, and the largest mall would require a car. IMO, take the day and a half you have and enjoy downtown at a leisurely pace.

I agree, but do grab a cab to Liberty Bar for a great dinner in a funky, leaning old building. It's great food, great atmosphere, great bread, great margs. The oldest restaurant/ bar in Texas. Its on Josephine St. just a short cab ride from downtown.
Have fun. SA is great for a weekend.

You can keep yourself busy - and in trouble - just staying around the Riverwalk. The Alamo is just a few blocks away, the King William Historic District is within walking distance (if old houses do it for you...). You can rent a car to see the "other" missions if you are into old missions, not much other reason to rent a car.
