Starwood Preferred Guest - W Suites Halifax - but it's not Starwood

Does anyone know anything about this? W Suites Halifax (http://www.wsuites.ca/)
I've been looking for apartments and came across this.
There's no mention of SPG or any other W properties on it's website and no mention of it on the W site. But the branding online (and at the property itself) seems to suggest that it is in fact a W of some sort.
Weird.

I think I can hear the Lurkers sending this one to the legal department right now...

The W is strikingly similar to the W Hotels logo IMO, but obviously this building has nothing to do with SPG. I'll leave this one to the lawyers!

WWWow.
Looks like trademark infringement.
The website was first registered in 2007, so it doesn't predate W of Starwood.

How do you know what I will be doing next?... Don't tell me you are my long lost imaginary friend since my childhood days...:D

Ok. Nonsense apart.

Thanks for the heads up. Let me follow up with my colleagues on this.

It was a really nice building they tore down for this too.
So if they are using the mark without permission . . . No Mercy!:D

I remember going for a walk while staying at the Westin Grand in Vancouver, coming across a St. Regis, and thinking that I'd feel bad for anyone who reserved it and expected a traditional (Starwood) St. Regis experience.

That's a little different, since it was built in 1911. I'd be willing to bet that the St Regis trademark hadn't been extended to Canada at that time! There is (was?) a St Regis hotel here in Calgary since the early 1900s, which was more of a disreputable rooming house at the end of its life than a hotel, but I believe it is being converted into part of the base for The Bow, a new skyscraper.

Since the topic is Starwood trademark protection, there was a Sheraton in Melbourne, AU, that noted it was not an ITT Sheraton back in ~1996. The lettering on the building looked awfully familiar...

If you look at the website and the hotel facade, it is actually the West Inn and Suites, not the Westinn. It was pretty clear to me that it wasn't trying to surf on the Westin image.

Hmmmph. I thought it was trying to say it was a Westin without suites... :p

Interesting. W Suites was the old name for W Silicon Valley. However, the concept did not take off, so it was renamed.

However, that logo and name is waaaaay to close to the W hotel name and logo.

Just a quick update:

Was walking past yesterday and the logo has been covered up with black paper. The door still has a familiar looking W on it, but they've got a completely new logo on the website.

I'm guessing the IP lawyers enforced the trademark. Halifax isn't a bad place to do that. I wonder how/if the lawyers will enforce the trademark against the hotel doing business as the Sheraton Erbil in Iraq. It's acting as a Sheraton, down to the Red S... but isn't part of Starwood...

It looks like it officially goes by the Erbil International Hotel and from the pictures online cannot see the "S" so it's possible they have already taken care of this.

Haven't visited the web site, but was in Erbil recently, so I would be surprised if it has changed. It wasn't the time for me to be taking pictures... I must say, in my personal opinion, the Kurdish area impresses me with their constant improvement, so I expect they'll work things out.

Wow. Guess I wasn't the only one to notice that!

I have stayed at the Westin Nova Scotian for probably 26 days in the past two years while just on vacation, and have walked past that "W Suites" building several times, and it catches my eye every time I walk by it. Glad to see something finally done about it! lol

Ha, reminds me of the Ritz Carlton Montreal (http://www.ritzmontreal.com/), which is, in fact, an independent hotel not affiliated with Ritz Carlton International or Marriott.

Of course, that particular hotel predates the Marriott group..
