Hi,
I'm wondering if you could help keep a current list of 'sale' prices on current model netbooks - as an updated guide for anyone considering buying in the short term. [see Post #2 below]

Any new models worth sharing as 'Deals'? Clearance 'deals', much better than usual?
Some big clearance sales in Australia, so add any local bargain deals and I'll update the index. :)

Check the S101 Eee PC in Oz - a 25% saving there and way more than half off the original price.

[continued from #1]
...models being superseded could eventually be replaced on the list.

While most FTer readers can get price info from a US website, most or all of us travel - the prices could be useful for anyone traveling, especially if it means a good deals while overseas.

The main reason I'm posting now is because of the story that Asus is seeking to increase its netbook and notebook prices by 20%.

If the other manufacturers follow suit, could we see netbooks, generally, increase in price by 10% for any new models?

Asus's Eee lineup to receive price increase? (http://www.techspot.com/news/33541-asuss-eee-lineup-to-receive-price-increase.html)
Asus isn't happy with the cut they take on each Eee unit sold. The cost of manufacturing the units has gone up, for both the raw hardware and the manufacturing process itself, and this has hurt Asus’ bottom line. These factors and others may have contributed to a recent decision by the company to increase prices across the board on their Eee products, as well as their notebooks. It seems that much of their hardware will see a price hike as high as 20%, starting on March 1st. Not all products will see the same increase, but specifics were not mentioned.

I doubt that 'sale' prices of popular netbooks will go up, but new models might be priced higher and take longer to get to the very-good price levels of today's popular netbooks.

Is a quick index/update of price changes useful, or just something worth bumping when there is a big sale? :)

Is anyone able to update us on the current sale prices for the following, which should be available now or very, very soon? (UK, AU, other places in addition to USA if possible)

Asus Eee PC 1000HE (should be internationally available about now; cheaper than planned?) AU price seems cheaper than expected
Acer Aspire One 10" (out yet?)
Any other newly-released netbook? (Dell 10", more MSI Wind models, new HPs)

Just be aware that this is from the Costco website... you will not find anyhting close to that selection in the stores.

Also, on the plus side, Costco gives a 90 day return policy and a full 2 year warranty on their electronics. Buy with the right credit card and you'll get another year on the warranty.

It's the "old" 904 machine. 4GB SSD and 512MB memory. Not a bad deal, but not great either :(

It was stupid of Target to pick a Linux machine, as I'm not sure that the average Target shopper will be too thrilled to take the thing home only to realize that it won't run any of their games.

For Acer One Aspires, you want to make sure you get the 6-cell battery, rather than the 3-cell, and the 160 gigabyte hard drive model, rather than the 120 gigabyte model.

For nothing but web surfing/blogging and occasionally printing a grocery list from Google Docs, I imagine Linux would be a smaller, faster OS. True? Or no? I know I can get Firefox for Linux, and I believe Firefox add-ons are platform independent?

I'm about to pull the trigger on a netbook and don't want to over- or underbuy. Specific recommendations based on the use mentioned above?

Yes - Linux would appear to be the better option, but in my experience it will eventually piss you off. Sooner or later you'll want to connect your iPod, or do something Windowsy, and you'll regret it.

It will run Firefox, and all its plugins, and it will run Thunderbird, but at the end of the day I did not find it all that faster or smaller. A basic XP installation can be tiny, especially once you strip a lot of the bulk out of it.

Mikey, in your situation I'd try to get into a few shops and compare the netbooks side-by-side. I think the software issue is just one aspect of deciding - here are my own factors for deciding. I think you're better off buying what suit you best, rather than today's deal of the day. :)

Try doing what you want to use the netbook for.
Try to type what you normally type, access the websites/services you use.
How is the keyboard, the screen (size, legibility, brightness, overall quality in your eyes), the size of the unit, the weight of it.
Especially try the keyboard as some hate the small right-side shift button; some people have issues with keyboard flex. Others want the largest possible keys (a la HP models).

How is the trackpad - and especially, the mouse keys? I hate those right-left keys and prefer the normal keys under the pad.

Try the 8.9" and the 10.2" models, preferably as a playoff between the sizes, then between ones of the same size. I prefer the 10" to the 9" after trying them side by side. The size gives you better-designed trackpads/keys, too (in the Eee PC line anyway).

How important is battery life? Newer models have the new polymer battery, for longer life and/or a smaller, lighter size.

Do yuo want to get the highest-resolution screen, to see more of a page? There's the one HP 2133 (superseded by a new one recently) with a higher-res screen, but costs more.

Windows XP isn't bad on a netbook. Avoid Windows Vista, based on the overall negative response of netbook users.

Aside from all of the 'try before you buy', have you read this 'netbook for travel' (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-technology/918708-netbook-travel-5.html)thread?

Any other questions? Best to check there - then check prices here. (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-technology/920411-tt-netbook-index-current-market-prices.html) :D

I have little interest in anything Windowsy, but I get your point. For example, I may want to listen to my iTunes library over a wireless network to the netbook. If that's not pretty simple to do under Linux, then that may be more than I want to sign up for.

Given my limited use (really just web browsing), will 8 megs be enough for an XP machine? Guess I don't know how much space the OS will consume, even stripped of its bloat.

I ordered the Dell Mini from Sams. It's one of the cheapest available, I like that it's fanless and uses SSD and is therefore silent, and if I hate it I can just take it to the local club and return it, no questions asked.

Wonder if the 4-6 week delivery timeframe quoted in my order confirmation (and on the Sams Club website) is accurate?

Typing this post on my (red!) Dell Mini 9 from the Sams Club deal, which just arrived today. Not a bad little machine. Keyboard will take some getting used to, but it's got a decent feel.

I will say that this XP machine reminds me why I so prefer Mac OS X. I may order a 16G SSD and Hackintosh it.

Costco (http://www.costco.com/Browse/Product.aspx?Prodid=11333685&whse=BC&Ne=4000000&eCat=BC|84|78453&N=4034819&Mo=11&No=1&Nr=P_CatalogName:BC&cat=78453&Ns=P_Price|1||P_SignDesc1&lang=en-US&Sp=C&topnav=) just added the Samsung NC10 back to their web site this morning with a $20 price drop to $429. I ordered one to give it a try (had seen it up close in London last month).

Why would you? The Asus 1000HE offers much more bang for your buck with a faster CPU, better battery, better keyboard and better WiFi, all for almost $60 cheaper.

Plus, Costco probably charges sale tax where you live, and many people can get away without having to pay that on Amazon.

Don't get me wrong - the NC20 is a nice machine, but it just doesn't seem to stand out much.

Primarily because I can return it, if I don't like it, locally, without any questions, at no cost, and the second year warranty. There's enough features for my primary use which is basically internet surfing. Should add the price has dropped to $399 now (plus $20 shipping) and I was credited the difference.

Is anyone currently shopping for a netbook and finding better prices?

Please add your latest 'best deal' prices and I'll update the index. Thanks!

(There should be a few run-out special prices on models being replaced, e.g. 8.9" models replaced with 10.2" versions - Acer and Dell? Possibly Eee PCs. Any others?)

Bought the same from B&H last week for $335.00 delivered w/out tax. Cool machine, my wife loves it.

About a month ago, I bought an open box MSI Wind U100 420US for $283 from Best Buy with a $40 of coupon I had. My net cost was $243 plus tax.

I picked up a Netbook about 2 weeks ago from Sam's Club:
Dell Inspiron 10"....$349

Strangely, they aren't found at all the Sam's Club locations locally; I have 2 within 5 miles of home, one had it, the other didn't.

A quick update's in order, per the 'Netbook for Travel' thread's recent posts:

At zipzoomfly:
ASUS Eee PC 1000HE (N280 1.66GHz 10in 160GB HDD 1GB) $349 after MIR (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10010057&prodlist=celebros)http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-technology/920411-tt-netbook-index-current-market-prices-3.html
MSI Wind U123-001US (N280 1.66GHz 10in 160GB HDD 1GB) Blue OpenBox# $297.49
OpenBox#: NO REFUNDS are accepted for any items in these categories.
# Open box or refurbished products are items which have been previously purchased and returned.

Any other recommendations?

That 2Gb RAM for notebooks / netbooks, $11.99 after rebate (CORSAIR VSA2GSDS667D2 2GB DDR2 SODIMM), looks worthwhile, should anyone be tempted with this vendor's gear and decide to upgrade the memory to run a newer OS. :)

Aussie special if anyone's looking: S101 for AUD$444.44 (+ $14.44 delivery).
Not so great a deal converted to USD as it's $392ish USD.
www.zazz.com.au daily deal with 12hrs remaining.

Very tempting. Does this mean these are being liquidated in the USD$200ish range, internationally?

Any news or deals on netbooks worth sharing? I can get one locally on mwave.com.au for AUD$390 which translates to $349 or possibly $333, less 9.09% tax refund at the airport. That's w. 6 cell battery.

Reviews have been quite good except for the unit's struggle with the slower z520 1.33MHz CPU running HD video. I notice zipzoomfly has its cheapest 751H at $275 (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10011200&prodlist=celebros) but that's the 3-cell battery and I'd always prefer to go with the larger battery. The zzf site's quoting $294 for this one with a 6-cell. (http://www.zipzoomfly.com/jsp/ProductDetail.jsp?ProductCode=10011194&prodlist=celebros)

I know it's the slow CPU, but it's for novice, senior citizen users, who just want something which works, yet is light, easy, yet large enough to be easy to read and type with.

Is this sub-USD$300 the usual 'good deal' price for this unit? Thanks!
