We're considering taking a RT flight from MEL to SIN, and with the QF "kids fly free" sale, the price for our family of 4 is almost identical between QF and EK. It appears that QF flies a 747 on this route, and EK flies a 777-300.

We have never flown either carrier, other than a flight between AKL and Queensland (don't remember the airport code) a few years ago. I thought that the denizens of this board might be the best informed on the relative merits of each on this route. Any thoughts or recommendations? I can see the hard number comparisons on Seatguru, but I'm also interested in a comparison of the soft product in Economy.

Thanks!

EK is dismal in Y and J, it is only F that is super luxurious. Some of their planes (half the fleet) are configured with an extra seat per row in Y (not sure if those are only regional flights or ever make it to MEL). QF Y would seem more like J on EK by comparison. Really no contest, there is a big difference in quality and QF wins big-time.

I think EK is often over-rated. I preferred QF for a similar leg in economy - I was put on an EK flight after a delay and I was not particularly impressed with any aspect of it. It's not that QF is particularly impressive in economy, though.

I don't expect much when travelling economy class anyway. As the name suggests, economy class travel is neither for comfort, great food nor great service :p
