Ladies, I'm looking for some comfy but cute flats for doing lots of walking in Paris in the spring. Will the Tory Burch Reva flats do the trick? If not, can anyone recommend something? Last time I spend time walking around Paris in flats, it was NOT pretty. Those flats murdered my feet.

Check out Campers for more funky yet stylish flats. They are designed for walking and very comfy.

I also like Clarks. Not the prettiest (but not ugly) and very comfortable

I haven't tried the Reva flats, but my personal favorites:
1) Keds Champions - the plain old classic canvas sneakers. I think any kind of trainers/running shoes scream "tourist", but these are really clean-lined, and look smart with slim trousers or jeans, and quite "retro" with capri pants.
2) Sam & Libby black leather ballet flats. These are dressy enough to wear with a skirt, and the soft ones hardly take up any room in your luggage.

Naturalizer also makes very comfy flats, and while some models are frumpy, a few are stylish.

I'd also recommend wearing some sort of hosiery, since even very comfortable shoes can rub a bit if you go bare.

I succumbed and bought Arcopedico N17's (http://www.shopwiki.com/search/Arcopedico_N17_(Red)_-_Casual_Comfort?loose=t) this week. I have a slightly bulkier Arcopedico shoe that has been my workhorse shoe for all trips when I need a closed toe walking shoe. I wanted a slightly lighter/dressier shoe for a trip where I've got an overnight stop in winter weather, but much of the time will be in the tropics. I'm really pleased with it.

The shoe only comes in European sizes, so the equivalent to 5/6/7/8/9 etc. Generally I would want a half size. I found the shoe to run a bit large, so the size down worked best for me.

I will look into all your suggestions. Thank you!

I did go bare (no hosiery) last time, which likely also contributed to the problem.

I have a narrow foot, but usually find Naturalizers comfortable (down 1/2 size if I can't find a N). When I stumbled on these "NaturalSoul" (http://www.kohls.com/kohlsStore/shoes/brandsforshoes/naturalsoulbynaturalizer/PRD~c10759/NaturalSoul+by+naturalizer+Favor+Casual+SlipOn+Sho es.jsp) shoes last fall, I gave them a try. Unbelievably comfy from the first wearing. I wore them all over Argentina (BsA and the trails at Iguazu Falls). When I got back, I bought a second pair. Great with jeans or slacks. If they have any spring flats that are stylish enough for Paris, I would consider them.

I like the Geox flats for travel. I like the support the shoes give me. Also, the little vents in the soles really do help and I've used them in rainy weather can say that the water didn't go through the vents back into my shoe.

I bought a pair of Geox last year for my trip to Paris. Kind of a black leather driving shoe look. Very comfy and worked great, but the real trick is how they fit on YOUR feet. Comfort beats cute IMHO!

I also love Eccos on my feet!

Campers look great and look they're going to be comfortable, but they always kill my feet.

My favourite walking shoes are made by Josef Siebel. I have a couple of pairs of loafer-type shoes (including Tedra), and a few great pairs of sandals (including Zee and Adrianna). Have a look at the range on zappos.com (and you can get major Marriott Rewards points or Thank You Points for clicking through their reward mall portals to zappos!)

Whatever shoe you choose for your trip, make sure you take it for a full day's "test drive" first. Shoes that look comfortable don't always fulfil their promise.

One thing that I always include in my flats (especially now since recovering from last year's bout of plantar fasciitis) are supports, such as SuperFeet.

It's made a ton of difference, although I had thought they were a bit uncomfortable the first few times I wore them. They definitely help keep my feet from falling apart after being on them for a while.

^ for Josef Siebel. I have a pair that I bought specifically for walking all over Paris in Oct 07 and they did me very well. I still wear them all the time. I'll be definitely looking to pick up a new pair for my Europe trip this fall.

Cole Haan "Air Bria" are my favorite flats. I've tried several other flats from the Cole Haan "Air" line and the Bria are the most comfortable. I'm on my third pair and use them in lieu of a traditional sneaker for travel and city walking.

I love Taryn Rose - so comfortable! I also love Hogan's walking shoes. Prada also makes a lesser expensive "sport" line that is made for walking (i know, it is Prada, how less expensive could it be) BUT they also have a 1.5" pump, an all day heel, with a very soft rubber sole. So, if you're looking for style and comfort, Prada's sport line is your best bet. And, finally, there is a small Italian shoe company called Fratelli Rosetti, not sure if they're in your town, but they have a FLEXA line that is specifically made for walking.

:D I have about 14 pairs of GEOX. In summer I wear my loafers or ballet flats with those sockette things - I've tried a variety and find the HUE ones best. They tend not to slip around. There are a large number of styles from the driving moc to the various buckled ones to ballet flats to wedge heels.

GEOX are actually usually cheaper in America. Find a style you like and order online; there are great sales and you can get them for 1/3 to 1/2 off what we are charged in Europe.

I was pleasantly surprised with a pair of Skechers Mary Janes in black leather. They seem to be a hybrid of a Mary Jane, a ballet flat, and a bike shoe. The sole has a bit of spring to it, there's a little bit of arch support (could be better, but most ballet flats are just that--flat and unforgiving). I ran around in them the last time I was in London and my feet were thankful that I did.

These shoes look very comfortable in the picture. Are the soles strong enough to withstand the cobblestone streets in Paris? Last year I brought along a pair of shoes that had soles that were really too thin.
They were doable but I'm looking for a pair of flats for walking with sturdier soles.

I have a very similar pair from Naturalizer which I wear as my very casual tough walking shoe. They've been all around the world and still look new. I agree - extremely comfortable no matter the terrain, and they have never hurt my feet. I can go all day in them.

I've told this story before, but once I was at MUC going through extra security screening, and the screener kept lapsing into English while she was talking to me. I finally asked 'why do you think I am not German?' to which she replied 'I keep forgetting because of your shoes'. :D

I had been for a hike around the lake and forgotten to change out of these shoes before I left the house for the airport.

See, if I buy them online nobody can laugh at my size. They have snorted with laughter in GEOX stores from Germany to Austria to Italy to Manhattan to China. Only the Manhattan store had my size and they were a few years old. Nordstrom giggled, if I recall.

I order online and nobody laughs! :p

I second the recommendation of Skechers -- I have two pairs, one like the ballet flat/bicycle shoe crossover youreadyfreddie mentioned, and one like a sleek version of a tennis shoe. Both are comfortable, but I've found I can go a lot farther without discomfort if I wear socks or those little hosiery socks that just cover your feet. They got me around Buenos Aires for a week and a half, and both are chic and modern-looking. And I adore my Naturalizer black ballet flats so much that I'm tempted to buy more pairs in different colors -- I wear them all over San Francisco.

While I love my Geox boots which are great for walking, I live in my Merrills. My mode of transporation living in NYC is on foot. Merrills are attractive and enormously comfortable.

Do a search and type in the word "shoes". You'll see several threads in which we've talked about what shoes are most comfortable for travelling, what looks good, etc. I think that will help you! :)

Hi Ladies:

Re: Skechers Mary Janes. I found them today on 6pm.com's web site for about $30 a pair--considerably less than what I paid for them. I did a search on www.6pm.com for "Skechers Mary Janes" and about 30+ versions came up, some with the more sneaker-like sole mentioned by another poster here.

I'm not affiliated with 6pm.com, but wanted to share the info here for what seems like a good deal on a chic little shoe that's comfy, stylish, and good for walking. Cheers all!

Ever since those women of the FLDS polygamist cult waxed poetically about their love of skechers when interviewed on CNN after their kids were taken into protective custody by the state of Texas, that brand lost my interest.

LATTER-DAY RESTRAINTS
RAIDING THE CLOSET FOR LATEST CULT FASHIONS

PUFFY polyester dresses, sporty Skechers sneakers, sky-high bangs (circa the late '80s) and a unibrow might just be your ticket to heaven. Who knew?

Fashion and grooming certainly aren't the biggest concerns to emerge from the Yearning for Zion (YFZ) Ranch since federal officials began their raid of the Texas compound in early April.

But it's become just about impossible to ignore the superficial. Cult members' elaborate hairstyles, voluminous tailored gowns and gentle, pastoral demeanor have riveted the nation.
...
Unacceptable clothing would incur a swift crackdown from within the community.

"If I were to wear a skirt that someone thought was too short, since we were all related, they'd have the right to correct that because everybody had the right to keep the family in line," says Jessop, speaking to The Post by phone from her home in Utah. "Right away, my father would get five phone calls."

Every day, FLDS women don between four and five under-layers - long prophet-mandated underwear, bra, leggings and slips, she says.

Despite the scorching summer heat in Eldorado, Texas, where the current headquarters are, and Colorado City, where the Yearning for Zion sect was previously situated, the handmade dresses are constructed of synthetic polyester or rayon.
...
On their feet? Skechers, the mall staple.

"They still wear Skechers," Jessop says.

"Skechers are a big thing down there - the lace-up ones can look pretty nice with those dresses. And they're a sports shoe. You're on your feet all day long - a lot of times you're working in the garden, cooking in the kitchen, cleaning the house. It's not a job where you're sitting down."

I recently bought a similar Circa Joan and David shoe in a "pewter" snakeskin with a black rubber wedge heel (can't find a picture) that's very comfortable, although a bit too easy to slip out of when I have tights on.

I may have to go check out Geox based on the recommendations in this thread--I saw a very cute black patent ballet flat of theirs recently.

That's the Stefany style, I believe - I have it in black patent. It took me awhile to get used to the squared off toe, and the lining is a little more slippery than the others I have, but I like the shoes and they get a lot of compliments. I like wearing it with dark bootcut jeans or an A line skirt in summer.

I second the recommendation for Merrell's. I took a pair of leather clogs with me to UK in December and they were the only shoes I wore for 10 days. I walked a great deal in London and never had any issues with my feet. In the summer, I live in the Merrell mesh clogs. May not be the prettiest shoe out there, but definitely among the most comfortable.

In the past few years I've tried to get around London (London seems to want to eat my feet right off my legs) wearing Bass, Aerosoles, Clark's and other "comfortable' shoes I could afford at the time. After ending up practically in tears one day because my feet were literally throbbing with pain...I vowed to spend money on truly comfortable shoes. Problem was, I didn't know what to buy.

Having read some of your recommendations, I think I may need to try a few. In the meantime, however, a co-worker recommended simple ol' Rockports. I bought a pair of boots (seem to need a moderate heel) and LOVE LOVE LOVE them. I made it through a three day trip last December with nary a peep from my feet. Never have I been so happy with a shoe. Worth shedding a tear over, let me tell you.

These are the kind of shoes that have such a wonderful "shock absorbing" system that you almost can't hear a sound even when walking across a concrete floor. They make flats with the shock absorbing system, too.

My feet are thrilled, and I didn't break the bank. But I think I'd like to check out a few of these really cute shoes you are all raving about, too...

(Skechers are comfortable for about an hour, then my lower back starts to hurt. Must be the flatness. But I can see where they might be very comfortable for someone who doesn't need a little height in the heel.)

On my last two trips to London I planned on wearing some Clark's black leather clogs, but they didn't work out, and I ended up going to the Nike Store on Oxford street and getting some black leather walking shoes, which worked out well. I love the Clark's clogs, which are great when it comes to the security checkpoint at the airport, but sometimes the sole seems too soft, and the lack of a back seems to cause ankle fatigue when I'm doing a lot of walking. So . . . for the last couple of trips, they've been dead weight on my feet and then in my suitcase after I bought other shoes.

One thing I need to remember for the future which might be of use to some of you . . . usually before a trip, I get a pedicure. On my most recent trips to where I was doing a lot of walking, the soles felt as though they were "burned" and very tender. I thought maybe my socks were to blame, but after I got back home it occurred to me that the day before each trip, I went in for a pedicure where the aesthetician used a gel on the soles of my feet to soften them and remove callouses. I now opt out of that part of the treatment.

I like the style of the geox stefany and lola that were shown here, but patent doesn't work for me, although I love the way it looks. Are you able to find them in leather? Also, is there any arch support or do you need to use an insole? Thanks for any info. :)

SD 1K, is the leather on the top of the shoe a light weight leather? I'm assuming they had a sole hard enough for the cobblestones of Paris. I love the way that these shoes look on Zappos. They look comfortable. I'm going to order a pair.

I decided that burning I experienced was from being allergic to the material of the shoe soles. I no longer buy New Balance or Clark's, have no problems with the black sole material from Taryn Rose, Teva, ...

Going to Europe in the summer. I really prefer sandals in the warm weather, but from previous experience know that those can be impractical for lots of walking, especially on cobblestones/uneven sidewalks.

What's the best for warm/hot weather that is sturdy and stylish? I like the looks of the Merrill Circuit MJ Breeze and the Geox D Chat Ballerina.

Also need something not too flat--a small heel really helps during a full day of walking. Maybe the Cole Haan Alexis Air MJ.

I'm afraid I expect too much. Also, really watching the baggage weight, but considering taking 2 pairs of day shoes to alternate plus reasonable heels for night.

What's the best for warm/hot weather that is sturdy and stylish? I like the looks of the Merrill Circuit MJ Breeze and the Geox D Chat Ballerina.
Well, if you can give a little on "stylish" I highly recommend SAS Huarache or Trio sandals. I have both (not in the Grandma colors!) and can walk for hours in them, including on rough paving. I also have wide feet, incorrectly healed breaks and a bone spur, so you can take it from me these things do "comfortable" really well.

(yes, I know a few of those styles are hideous, but not all! ;) )

One, one other thought: velcro sandals are not good for prolonged walking IME. They're hotter, and sometimes the velcro "gives" and you get the sandal flopping against your foot.

I only wear shoes which I buy at Integra Nusshof AG in Switzerland (http://www.integra-ag.ch) or at Comfortschuh in Germany (http://www.comfortschuh.de). There are several shops in Switzerland, but only one in Germany. You can order as well; however, I am not sure about delivery outside of Switzerland or Germany.

The offer in Germany and Switzerland is the same. Since about 10 years, I am basically living in these shoes and cannot do without. They are great for walking and accompany me on every trip, business or private. Yes, they are pricy, but even look good after many years. I am still wearing a pair of which I bought 8 years ago and have used very often since. Since they are so enduring, I do not need many. Also, I love red shoes and am very grateful for their large offer.

Maybe this is useful for travellers to Germany and Switzerland.

I have had a couple of pairs of the SAS Duo over the years. Very comfortable, I too have walked for hours in them, including once in New Orleans where I took a pair out of the box directly into my suitcase, and then wore them for a 10 hour walk without any kind of break-in and without getting a single blister.

Not on the page that CDTraveler linked, but on the 'What's new' page, there is a pair of sandals (Strippy) that look like they might have a little bit of a wedge heel on them.

I love the Trio. I walked all over Paris in those for days on end. They really are a comfort sandal........not real pretty but not that homely either.

San Diego 1K put me on to Arcopedicos. I had never heard of them before. I recently ordered 2 pair and one has arrived. These shoes (http://www.shoebuy.com/arcopedico-cheri/43111/125454)are SO comfortable. You can wear them as sandal-type shoes but, because it has a knit upper, it really could pass for a little dressy with nice slacks. I know this thread is about walking shoes and I believe these shoes could qualify because of the sturdy, but light-weight, sole.

I got lucky because I hit it on a 20% off day so I got them for about $50.00.

I've been watching shoes all afternoon. Zappos' map (http://www.zappos.com/map/) is awesome for seeing what other folks are buying across America. The interesting thing for me is seeing the same funky shoes bought simultaneously in Boise and LA.

It also has the benefit of displaying shoes that you might not have seen or considered. When you click on the photo image, it takes you to the description of that particular shoe. Pretty handy!

I finally decided on the Ecco Yarrah. So comfortable, yet looks good. I wore them shopping all day to break in...no break in was really necessary. I didn't even take them off when I got home--just wore them the rest of the day. Really happy with this choice. I think they'll be great this summer.

Ah, here are the Circa Joan and Davids I was talking about (http://www.lordandtaylor.com/eng/Shoes-_Yolanda__Slip_On_Wedges-lordandtaylor/47305), although they don't show the pewter. Pretty comfortable so far, although I haven't tried them out for serious city walking yet.

And I went back and bought them in black patent, too. :)

Calcifer, are those the pewter shoes I saw in Kansas City? If so, I wouldn't have guessed that they were comfy shoes. They came down on pretty girly shoes more.

Yeah, I guess it's where you fall on the cute vs. comfy spectrum; I may be on the shallow end. :) I think they're a good balance of cute and comfy, but I'm sure there are people who'd like a little more support than these provide.

FWIW, Cole Haan is having a honking sale. 30% off sale prices and free ground shipping.

Not bad. I picked up a pair of shoes for 76 bucks with tax. They are still 178 bucks on zappos.com.

Sale through April 13th.

I have the worst feet in the world--short, wide, high instep, and extremely blister prone. After reading your posts about the brand, I tried a pair of Arcopedico's from Zappos in a different style (Queen II). I'm amazed at how comfortable they are. I'm very grateful to you for mentioning them, as I thought I'd run out of things to try.

I'll put in my vote for the J-41 Aquarius as a comfy shoe. I have two pair of them and am thinking of getting a third color. I like that the straps are very adjustable. I shattered my left fibula and dislocated my left tibia 18 months ago. It left my left ankle a lot larger than my right one. I'm not yet able to wear any kind of heel, so I'm living in flats now. The Aquarius has done me well in all of my situations. They are great for travel - they look good with shorts, jeans, pants, and dresses.

Just got my Cole Haan juliette's yesterday. They look remarkably like my privos hammocks I just bought and kill me after a few hours, but much classier and appear as if they will be much more comfortable.

Cole Haan has extended their F&F sale until 4/20 with free shipping. I'm going to pick up another pair in red (I know, shut up) ==178 to 76 with tax and what not.

footsmart.com will give you 15% off with CODE: WG23SHIP. They sell a wide variety of shoes. I called to order and told the CSR that I got free shipping last time and they offered me the free shipping along with the 15% off.

Miracle of miracles I was not laughed out of the Geox store in the Getreidegasse last week!

I am pleased to announce that 'bigfoot exbayern' left Salzburg with a new pair of shoes, albeit not the new cute summer ones I want from Geox. I will have to wait until they come on sale on Amazon.com or Zappos, as the Geox store only carries my size now in two styles.

FYI for those ladies who like Geox, Amazon.com has several styles for 50%+ off. I just picked up two pairs for about $40 each and took advantage of the Amazon.com promotion to take $20 off an $80 purchase. So two pairs of Geox for $63 and free shipping.

Make sure you narrow your search to Amazon.com as the seller to get the promo which you will see in your cart on check out. Also click the free shipping option since it's default is paid shipping.

I cannot believe that I am posting this, but here goes....

Birkenstock, anyone? My last pair was 20 years ago but as I moved out of culinary they were appropriated by my mother. My sister now swears by her Mephisto and Birkenstock and I am debating buying a pair of Madrid sandals. (NO, I WON'T BE WEARING THEM WITH SOCKS!)

The ones that were made popular by Michael Kors - those are cute.

I find them very comfortable, but my feet are small, so I look like an elf.

I do like the clogs. I should pick up a pair for the house.

Gizeh is the style. I don't care for the madrid. You might as well buy a pair of adidas slip on slippers. Those don't seem to have much grip.

I can't believe that as a woman wearing prada flats right now I am saying that I am going to buy a pair of birks.

I feel the same way, but I took the plunge!!

I bought Birki in the 'Madrid' style. I too was worried about them falling off but they don't; they seem to cup the foot. And I wear a lot of mules and slides so this isn't too much different.

I really wanted the Sylt style but don't like this year's colours; would like black patent or the black/pindot I ended up buying in the other style.

My sister has about a half dozen pairs of the Gizeh - she really likes those (and the similar ones from Mephisto)

Definitely the American prices (especially online) are far cheaper and if I do decide to buy more in future it will be via that route.

So far I am pleased with the purchase and they look cute; because I have large feet a lot of shoes make me look boat-like, but these have so little 'shoe' that they make my feet look smaller. And while I was worried about the base being so wide, they really don't look that way on my foot.

Still having a bit of a mental issue getting over actually buying and wearing a pair of Birkenstock that isn't required for work, but I think that I can get over that. :D

For those of us with fallen arches (or high arches, or plantar fasciitis), I did some research and mephisto, naot, dansko have great arch support.

I hear taryn rose is great, but I have been personally hesitant to spend 300 dollars on a pair of shoes.

For flip-flops with arch support - orthoheel and olukai's are awesome.

I got the comfort down - any tips on stylish and versatile? (i.e. black, brown? heels, flats, platform?)

I'm getting married in Florence on October 15 and then honeymooning in Como, Venice & Bruges (all his idea so definitely a keeper!) I have a pair of ECCO Flair 2 tone mary janes (black/pewter) that I usually wear for traveling & sightseeing but they're just too open & casual for this trip.

Can anyone suggest something more closed across upper foot (in case of rain), comfortable for lots of walking on cobblestones, fairly light weight, and adaptable to both casual jeans days and slacks/dress for cozy romantic cafe dinners? I'm considering the Umberto Raffini Regina here (http://www.thewalkingcompany.com/brands/Product.aspx?ProductID=10525&pagetag=women_umberto_raffini&source=Brand#) but no experience of the fit of this brand so any comments would be very helpful! I'm trying to only bring one pair of shoes for the honeymoon part of the trip & plan to ship back the wedding dress & shoes before I leave Florence thereby freeing up some space in my bag to acquire any fabulous shoes I may find in our travels.... :D

exbayem,

The other day I was leaving my favorite bbq joint when I saw a guy wearing socks with sandals. Those sandals were the quintessentially clunky Birkenstocks. I almost lost my lunch.

I don't know whether the Mephisto and Birkenstock sandals you are considering will suit you. I do however appreciate your assurance that no matter what they look like, at least you won't be wearing socks with them! I'm going to try to remember to be grateful for socklessness whenever I see ungainly sandals on bare feet.

Thanks for the funny!

:D

I now own two pair of Madrid style and one sort of cross strap Romanesque style, none worn with socks, and all quite dainty as far as Birkenstock go!

I will say that the patent Madrid seem a little snug, and I bought the narrow footbeds. My sister wears the Gizeh but bought the wide footbed, and they don't look bad either.

Prices were best at QVC and Amazon, although of course I see lots of discounts as well in Germany.

I am now considering a pair of the hot pink paisley print Madrid...

The best news is that a recent foot injury finally healed, and it was after I started wearing my Birkis all the time, even indoors. I don't know if that had anything to do with it, but I can finally walk more than a 1km and am working back up to my daily long speed walks again.

I never ever expected to wear Birkenstock outside of as a work safety shoe, but there are some nice styles which don't look like clown shoes, and if wearing them meant that I could get myself back to my walking pace and schedule I am grateful!

If you can still find them in your size, Taryn Rose Scion are deliciously comfortable and astonishingly lightweight. I just sacrificed a pair to become my travel hiking shoes because of their weight and comfort (combination of bad knees and desire to hike into the Cirque at Gavarnie again, this time in comfort, led to what some might consider an odd decision).

People have stopped me to ask what they are, so they must look OK in addition to feeling wonderful. They are the perfect shoes for cobblestones.
