Travel Technology - Is it even possible to buy a B&W only inkjet?

I need a printer for the kid -- she's printing enough now that it's annoying both of us for her to have to come into the office to get what she prints. I was thinking of an inkjet, but not a color one. She's far to into art and color, I'd go broke buying cartridges :-) I was looking on NewEgg and all I can find is color. Is it even possible to buy a B&W only inkjet? Or am I going to be stuck with a laser?

Thx

Laser is cheaper to run over time and doesn't suffer problems like blocked ink tubes etc.

I bought myself an HP 1005 laser printer and it's just so good for the price of around $75. First page out within about 15-20 seconds and the rest prints very speedily too. Text quality excellent.

As for whethere there are any B&W inkjets - I haven't seen any for about 10 years!

You could probably go one of the multifunction fax printers if you wanted to stay with black and white, though I would go laser, in the long run it's a much better choice.

Get a cheap laser. You can often get cheap laser printers for $50-80 bucks.

Laser. It's completely killed B&W inkjets. It's only in the lower-end color units that inkjet isn't trumped.

If you must get an inkjet and you want B&W, I would think all you'd have to do is install only the B&W inkjet cartridge (leave the color slot empty) and set up the printer for grayscale printing only.

If you print infrequently, I'd echo the advice others have given: get a laser. Ink jets tend to clog up if not used often.

all you'd have to do is install only the B&W inkjet cartridge (leave the color slot empty)I've tried this on a few HP and Canon inkjets, and it doesn't work. Even leaving in an empty color cartridge doesn't work, but this is just incidental experience with 3 or 4 printers.

I agree with all the suggestions for laser. But if for some reason you're dying for a B&W inkjet, get the HP B&W fax. It can also be used as a printer.

The 1005 is $85 with free shipping from Newegg. And it appears to work with Linux. Thanks guys.

FYI: I've got an OLD HP Inkjet (does anyone still connect their printer via a parallel port?). It stopped printing color, but still prints black fine. I use it occasionally to print out pages of stuff I just need on paper for some reason where color output does not matter (ie Google Maps directions).

I leave an old color cartridge in and set the print preferences to B&W only. Works great.

Not sure why anyone would want a B&W inkjet. Even though low-end inkjets cost less initially, with any serious use the cost of cartridges would make them surpass the low end lasers in fairly short time.

Among my printers I have a little Samsung ML-2010 that I paid about $80 for over 3 years ago. Still cranking out quite a few pages per month. New ones are faster and cheaper.

I've got a printer next to me connected parallel.

The thing is, it's shared between two computers. Since there's no chance of the two computers actually being used to print at the same time (they're on a KVM) all that's needed is to have a way to connect them both.

One is connected parallel, the other USB. It allows sharing the printer with no additional hardware.

Newegg

http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?nm_mc=AFC-&cm_mmc=AFC--_-NA-_-NA-_-NA&Item=N82E16828112086&CMP=AFC-C8Junction

has a brother laser for $50 after a $100 mail in rebate

Make sure to read the reviews if you are going to print labels on it.

My guess would be it comes with a very small cartridge yield wise, as the full replacement cartridge costs more than the printer does (though again, if you read the comments somebody posts an alternative for that too)

I will second that. I recently bought a Samsung ML-2510 and was totally amazed how fast it can print out the first page and subsequent ones. Mine was $50 after rebates at Staples and frequently that price at other retailers. A similar older Samsung is still going strong after over 2000 pages on the original toner.

I bought a Samsung laser printer almost a year ago and I'm still using the original toner cartridge.
