Family group including 4 women (mom 63, me 37, sis 35, sis-in-law 33) taking a trip to KSA for a former employee reunion from March 8-19. Family lived in Eastern Province of KSA from 1974-85 but I was just a kid so I really can't remember what was acceptable clothing for Western women in Saudi cities & towns and things have become more restrictive in the last 10 years.

Can anyone provide more specific information (maybe links or recs to particular clothing brands & pieces) beyond the oft-repeated and seldom defined "conservative, respectful, below knee & elbow, loose clothing"? I've tried to find old family photos of shopping trips to local towns but all are at parents' home....

I've worn trousers, a top with below the elbow sleeves and a scarf to cover the skin exposed by the v-neck of the top. Basically, only expose your head and neck, and hands and forearms.

In Abu Dhabi, is it necessary for a western woman to cover her head with a scarf or foulard?

Absolutely not.

Absolutely not.

Thanks that makes things much easier. I am currently applying for a job there and while it is unsure whether I will even get it, my GF already fretted about having to wear one to cover her head and hair, when she visits me.

What about driving? Are women allowed to drive a car in Abu Dhabi? Obviously she wouldn't have a local license but she does have an international one.

No ban on women driving. I wouldn't do it (taxis are plentiful and cheap and driving there is not fun), but it is not illegal.

:sigh: I know what trip you're going on, and wish I were going, too. Hmm...you're 37 and left in 85. I'm 38 and graduated from DH in 85. What town where you in?
