Pubs? Nightlife? I spent a few days in Auckland last year and found the Harbour a nice place to relax. Hopefully you'll have really good weather to enjoy eating and drinking al fresco! Auckland is a pretty small city, really, so finding alternatives just wont be that difficult. One thing I did enjoy was taking a boat to Waiheke Island for the day. Had an interesting Island tour and then had lunch at a small cafe overlooking the bay. Best grilled lamb chops of the trip!! Enjoy your time! A quick perusal of a guide book might help, but I think you could easily figure out even without that. Dave Vunder31 Feb 3, 09, 3:30 pm Has anyone done the bungy jump from the Auckland harbour bridge? It's not a very high one, ~45 metres, but I have a 12 hour layover in AKL on my way to RAR, so I thought I'd entertain myself with a jump :D They also offer a bridge walk, but I guess it's not as nice as the Sydney harbour bridge walk, right? Vunder31 Feb 3, 09, 3:35 pm Oh, I forgot to add my Auckland travel tips... Devonport is a nice visit. The navy museum and Mt. Victoria are both worth visiting. In the city centre, the Skycity tower is interesting, but I wouldn't spend any money on the Sky jump. The Sky walk, on the other hand, is pretty neat. Another interesting place is the Auckland museum. ramfunes Feb 4, 09, 1:35 pm Thanks for the great advice. ^ shas12 Feb 4, 09, 4:12 pm if you rent a car you can drive to Hamilton to see the glowworms RustyC Feb 5, 09, 1:43 am I'm a big fan of the mussel plates at any of the Belgian Beer Cafes (including the one near the city center). New Zealand has the plumpest green-lipped mussels in the world. The beers are imported from Belgium and not cheap, and the vlaamse frites are good, but the local mussels are the real standout. The places are pretty popular as well. I'd tend to favor the scenic-drive approach as well, though. Did one north to the Kauri forest (would have gone further with more time) and south to Rotarua. |
