Hyatt only allows the government rate for Federal employees correct? It'd save me over $400 at the Grand Hyatt Kauai if I could use it as a state employee (I know Intercontinental allows all gov't employees the rate). I just wish it'd show up on hotwire for a decent price, some people were paying $250 last year. Thanks everyone.

I know that many Hilton's will honor the federal rate for state employees and often it is listed separately in the listing when you request government rates. I would call the hotel directly as they normally ask for I.D. at check-in to verify your identity and that you are entitled to that rate.

Many Hyatts have a separate state government rate, especially in places where the state government reimbursement rate is less than the CONUS-allowed rate (e.g. Georgia, Texas).

My Federal tax dollars at work - why on earth would any federal employee need to stay (officially) at a resort hotel in Kauai ?

Believe it or not, there is real U.S. government work occurring in Hawaii.
I supported the Navy there on several occasions in the past. Very bizarre putting on a suit in the morning while everyone else is in shorts and a T-shirt...or less.

if a state rate is available, it is usually posted. But give a call and find out. That is a hotel that will check id (even for me as a diamond), so don't run the risk. I did stay on a fed rate while on fed business, too!
Just remember state rates usually only apply if you are an employee of the state that the hotel is located.
Usually check out the T&C. I know this has been a problem for me in PHL.

Your or your parent's Federal tax dollars paid for my six year vacation in Italy and travels to Greece, Turkey, Austria, Switzerland, France, England and Germany (Munich during Octoberfest). All of this while serving in the US Army. Having retired from the US Army one of the benefits is I can use the Government rate at hotels, so if it were me and if I wanted to stay at a resort hotel in Kauai using the Government rate I can (but this trip we are using Hilton points) :D

 Settle down, US Govt. Employees are only reimbursed the per diem so it does not matter where they stay, anything above the per diem comes out of their own pocket. Also, this is assuming the OP is even on official business.

Normally, that's true. But there are times it is impossible to get a rate at per diem or below In those situations, U.S. Government employees can be authorized to be reimbursed at the actual rate paid (up to 300% of the per diem rate). I have to do this almost everytime I travel to downtown Austin, TX, where the per diem rate ($114) never seems to be available at mid-level hotels.

In AUS, the Marriotts (Courtyard/TownePlace Downtown, airport locations) always have the per diem rate available. The Sheraton, Hilton, and Hyatt usually have it when I am looking for per diem rates.

Not when I will be there (2/10/09). NONE of the major chain downtown hotels have the government per diem rate available that night. The nearest Marriott (Courtyard Austin Central) with the government rate available is 3 miles from downtown. The Courtyard and Residence Inn in downtown Austin are BOTH sold out.

I haven't seen a gov't rate at the Hyatt Austin that equal per diem in over a year. It's running about 150 now....at least for the several dates i checked. PD is 107.

My husband is a state ee. I have found more times that the restriction is not included than is. YMMV.

I provide my state agency's ID and my travel purpose and have never had problems with it being accepted out-of-state.
I had a problem with the GH San Antonio deciding to change my confirmed state rate after I checked in but that's a different story.
I'm in the same situation, also a state govt employee. So I read the detailed description that goes with the rate. Some hotels say "Federal Gov Rte" which isn't us. Some hotels load a "State Gov Rte." Sometimes the state rate says good only for a specific state, sometimes it says "any state," sometimes it doesn't clarify. Sometimes there is one kind of government rate, maybe posted as "Government Rate" but the guidance specifically allows state. Sometimes the Government Rate guidance specifcallys says "US Government", which makes you wonder why they didn't just load is as "Federal Gov Rte".
And of course sometimes the rate is better than the AAA rate, and sometimes it isn't.
It's a pain, and I wish there was an easier way to search and see.

Didn't expect this thread to generate so much discussion :)
Well I called the other day. Only valid for federal employees, no one else. Oh well, worth trying.
