Link (http://www.nwa.com/worldperks/acctlink/) your Northwest and Delta Airlines accounts by March 15, 2009, to earn 500 Delta Airlines miles. This will allow immediate unlimited free transfers of miles between the two programs. Remember that the two programs will merge sometime this year.
If you have only one of these accounts, go ahead and get the other and then link them for the 500 miles.
The right to transfer miles between the accounts could be quite useful for people who don't have enough miles in either account to get the ticket they want, and for people who can get the ticket they want from only one of the two airlines, but need more miles for it in that airline's account.
Thanks for the info. I'm just wondering if there is any downside to linking the accounts?

Thanks for this info. I was tossing old papers earlier today and one of the things to go into the to be shredded was my NW account info since I was sure there were no miles in the account. Turns out I still had 1000 miles in the account from when I signed up in 2000. This will be a nice 1500 mile bonus for my Delta account.

You can also link to NW World Perks University through the OP's excellent website and pick up another quick 500 NW miles before you do the transfer if you haven't "attended" the University yet. Just click on the link at the bottom of the OP's post and go to Registration and Other Bonuses for Northwest.

There are also many other opportunites listed on my website below to get free or very cheap Northwest Airlines miles that might disappear after the merger. Particularly good ones are listed on my Other Programs I Like > Dining, on my Credit Cards > Annual Fee Cards > Northwest Airlines and American Express sections (though the first year is free), and on my Finance page. Get to those pages, click on each (important), then do a word search on "Northwest Airlines". Go get them while they last!

Are there any worthwhile opportunities that don't require new credit card/bank/brokerage accounts?

My wife has a NW account that has not had activity for 13 months. I transferred 1 mile to her Delta account then tranferred it back to NW. Voila! New account activity for her. ^

US Bank has removed the annual fee for the Worldperks Platinum and Worldperks Visa signature cards for 2009 (effective January 1, 2009). This applies to new applications (the T&C list the annual fee as $0) and to existing cardholder accounts (per US Bank CS). This makes these cards an even better deal. The change is for the year 2009, and who knows what they will do in 2010.

An interesting observation from one of my readers: "On the Delta site it says. 'Link your accounts and transfer your miles before March 15, 2009 and earn 500 bonus miles in your SkyMiles account.' Note the comment about transferring miles. The statement about 'and transfer your miles', only seems to appear on the Delta site as far as I can see and seemingly not in their 'Terms and Conditions' for this promotion."
If you want to be super sure of the 500 miles, you might do a small transfer of miles between the accounts. But this is probably just a typical example of unclear writing on the part of Delta.

I have an NWA account but no Delta account. Can I open a Delta account and then link the two? I will of course have no miles in the Delta account but am interested to know if just linking will get me the 500 bonus.
My wife has the opposite problem – Delta account but no NWA account. If she opens a NWA can she then link the two and get the 500 bonus?
We do not use these accounts too often but we would like to keep them active.
Thanks.

:)Now Fixed:
Is anyone else having trouble linking their accounts?
My name appears the same on each.
I know my email, address, and even phone is the same and STILL it claims my name is not the same, so it won't link. I do use first initial and middle name.
I have called twice, and written 3 emails to Delta on this. Agents in the past have stated they can't see the other system's accounts. Is this still true?? Though the 3 email responses are signed by names that appear real, I have gotten form-letter responses, or clear indication that either the person responding either 1) does not use English as their primary language, or 2) frankly can't read for comprehension, as none of them have bothered to even CHECK that my name is the same on both. Two of the responses were so off base as to hardly be called answers.
It tells me to put this in writing (no address given - assume NW Worldperks service center since both now use an NWA page to link the accounts), with a request for a "name change", and further asks me for legal proof of "name change".
*** Fixed: Delta does not have a middle name field for Skymiles. NW WorldPerks does. So if your middle name is in your first name field in DL Skymiles, then you will have to move it there for NW Worldperks also. Then the linking will work.

I opened an NWA account long time ago and really didn't get to accumulate any points. I realized for this promotion, all I have to do is to add a link and I get to add 500 miles to Skymiles which I am accumulating. Also got a 1k bonus by signing up to the dining network as listed in the partner promotions. Next step, sign up for the NWA mall and buy something I need anyway.
Thanks to everyone for the NWA posts.

For those of us who don't have to actually pay money for flights due to our ability to collect free miles, these small amounts of points help us keep our many airline account active so that our miles are not cancelled.

I did both when the promo came out, from both websites.
I was not sure if it would work to link, so was just trying it out to link and transfer. You can see I got both credits.
Now I tried again to link and there is no more.
By the way, this happened to me earlier with the 20 % bonus on Amex MR transfers. I signed up on both Amex and Delta websites and got a 40% bonus for the transferred miles!
However, I missed the 150% bonus in Nov by transferring in Sept.

I have a question about this.
What is the advantage (besides the 500 bonus miles) of linking the two accounts?
I have no miles in Delta and lots of miles with NWA... Should I transfer them all to Delta or just leave them on NWA? Will they eventually be transferred to Delta anyway?
Thanks
