I finally reached Platinum status on Dec. 30th of 2008 and I have stayed at a Starwood property on two separate nights this year. After the first night I looked at my account and the following was posted, "Platinum 500 Thank You Amenity". I had never heard of this before and I would like to know if I should expect to receive it after every stay at this hotel? What is the reason I received it? Thanks!

Congrats on Plat -- don't forget to sign up for the Nign after Night promo (http://www.spgpromos.com/nights/index.cfm?EM=VTY_SPG_NIGHTS_PROMOTION) too.

Thanks Cheap Elite, I guess I should have mentioned that I had read that FAQ post before asking my question, but I was still a bit confused. Given that there weren't any Thank You choices from this hotel, I assume that I will receive the 500 points each time I stay there. Works for me!

Unfortunately, you do have to remind them if they don't offer it. And even if you do, you'll want to double check the online statement since certain properties are notorious in not posting the amenity points. If that's the case, follow up with the platinum concierge.

Do take note that not all properties offer 500 Platinum Amenity points for your stay. As such, if you are particular about the Amenity points, do check if the property you are going to stay at, provides such options.

At check in the clerk should ask you which amenity you would like to receive. The 500 points is one of option, you can choose other if you don't want the points (such us special gift, etc). The correct procedure is that you mark the box of the plat amenity card. Some properties request you to sign it on the bottom, but I guess this is not mandatory.
Welcome to the club!

I have stayed at the same hotel 3 times this year, but only received my 500point Platinum Thank You Amenity after the first stay.
I do not have a Platinum card yet (I turned Platinum 12/30/09 -- how long does it take to receive) and I do not book my own rooms (my company takes care of it and I present my Gold SPG card upon check-in) so I am not sure how they knew I was Platinum. I have never been offered a choice of Platinum amenities (and I doubt that there is a Platinum concierge), all they ever do is write down my number and give me my room (which is only a SPG room about 1/2 the time and even then I cannot tell the difference from a "regular" room).
So, I guess the questions are how did I receive the amenity the first time, why didn't I get one the next two times, and how do I go about making sure that I get them every time in the future?
Sorry for all the questions, but there is a bit of a language (Spanish) barrier at the hotel, so I have trouble getting answers directly from them.

You turned platinum in the future? :p;););) Who is your psychic friend?
Hopefully, you'll get the card in the next week or two, when the new batch of cards will be sent out.
In the interim you can print off a temporary card, but that will trigger you getting a second card.
You can always call the platinum concierge while in line at check in if there is a problem.
The hotel knew you were platinum because it registers in their system.
In regard to the missing platinum amenity points, please call Customer Service to request the missing points.

the platinum concierge is not located in each hotel, that is what they call the SPG employees that you as a Platinum have access to for making bookings over the phone, in addition to helping to resolve Customer Service issues, as well as make dinner reservations or arrange babysitting etc... like a regular hotel concierge.

I would normally assume this to be correct, but then why do they handwrite my account number on their forms each time:confused:

What forms are we talking about? The ones in European properties that you sign when you check-in? Or your folio?

Sorry, I need to learn to be more specific. A form that essentially has my name, the date, the room number, and the room rate.

That is the key card holder. That happens at every Starwood Property I've stayed in.
