I am currently applying to JetBlue for a position, and have a few questions (I know we have some FAs and other employees here on FT). I am not a new member to FT - I've been a member for years and years, but my login name on here is the same as the login I'm using to apply to JetBlue, so while I don't anticipate any issues or problems to arise, I figure I'd rather keep things from being easily linked back to me. Could be over-protection on my part, but I'd rather be safe than sorry. With that said.....
I currently work running my own business, but have enough free time (and certainly enough interest in aviation) to pick up a job part time, and I noticed recently that JetBlue had an opening for a PT Airport Ops position. I sent in my application and resume, and ended up getting an email a few days later asking me to call an 800 number for an automated phone interview.
I have since completed the phone interview, and am waiting to hear if things go any further. In the mean time, I am curious what other steps there are to the application process (i.e. does basically everyone get invited to do the phone interview, or is it a selective group?).
Also, if I were to theoretically get the position, would I complete training at the JetBlue Uni in MCO, or is that just for FAs, etc? If so, what kind of training period would we be looking at for an Airport Ops position? I live about 2 hours from MCO, and would prefer not to relocate temporarily - I wouldn't mind the commute if it's just for a week or 2, but is it mandatory to be located there full time during the training?
Any insight from those who have been through the process would be greatly appreciated.

i used to work at Jetblue Airport Ops..actually im trying to go back and pick up an extra job. College tuition is getting too high!
Anyways. When i did the hiring process they didn't have the automated phone interview in place yet. But I'm guessing that some from the forest hills office will contact you if you further if they're interested and set you up with a formal interview at your local airport.
After that you'll have to go through a pretty extensive background check for security and a drug screen. After the interview& checks they'll make decision.
As to training everyone goes to MCO training center even airport operations positions..which there are positives and negatives. I agree that everyone should get the same training..but i think the costs involve are huge to send crewmembers to MCO when these types of jobs have such a high turnover rate. (Though it's a good vacation-sorta:D you have nights and weekends to do whatever) Jetblue will pay for lodging, $40 per diem for food, and training is paid full time. Training will last about 2.5 weeks. Pretty much everyone passes the training...though there were 1 or 2 in my session that were sent home unfortunately. most of the training are tutorials done online. YOu will have an instructor though! You'll learn how to use the res/checkin systems( which still uses like a DOS aged program) I didn't learn anything that i couldn't learn back at my home station...but it was nice to meet other crewmembers from all over the country.
2 hours away from MCO is quite a distance. I'm assuming you live in tampa? If i were you i would stay in MCO during the weekdays and go home on weekends...the distance is a bit far to commute everyday. Training starts at 9 AM ends around 4 or 5.
if you have further questions just ask!

aaron,
Thanks so much for all that information - since the system has changed since you went through it, it's hard to tell exactly where I'm at in the new process, so if anyone else has had recent experience with the actual steps in the hiring process, I'd be glad to hear about that.
I'm actually not in TPA, but for now, I'd rather not mention the exact city in which I'm applying, just to keep things anonymous. If we're looking at over 2 weeks of training, you're right that 4 hours of commuting everyday would probably get old pretty fast, so staying down there during the week might be the way to go. I'm excited about the prospect of getting the job, really just for my interest in the field - I don't really need the job/money, I've just had a lot of CS experience in the past and would love to be able to learn more about the industry.

Just be sure to dress more provocatively or else the gate agent won't let you on the plane.
Your post is a complete non sequitur from the OP and the rest of the thread. IMO, rather than try to find a witty way to just "throw that in there," you might have a better chance of opening up an actual discussion if you started a new thread.

Aaron was right on with everything. Just want to add that for this position you will also take a PAT (physical abilities test) around the same time as the drug test/background check, should you make it to that point. The PAT for Airport Ops (customer service/inside) is a lot easier than the PAT for Ground Ops (ramp). Basically, you will need to show that you can lift up to 70 lbs. (ie. a customer's bag)
Best of luck!

The OP asked a question about being an "employee" of the airline. My statement was an incident regarding an "employee" of JetBlue.
Ok. I will start another thread regarding "employee" of JetBlue.

The OP asked about the process of becoming an employee. The article refers to an incident that occured over a year ago between a flight attendant and a JetBlue employee. So because both ideas have the word "employee" in them, they're related?

Thanks for the additional info, jetBlueNYFL. One other question I do have...do travel privileges (i.e. complimentary SA travel) apply to part time employees as well? Are they any more limited than for full time employees? Thanks!

All employees including PT get full travel benefits this includes free unlimited standby for You & your parents/Spouse and one significant other. Kids too if you have any. Your specific station might also have agreements with other airlines. So you don't necessarily have to travel on B6. Where i worked we had agreements with WN, AS, CO, HA.
Also if there's only a limited seats left on a flight it's not based on seniority on who gets them but it's based upon who checked in for the flight first. So in essence in doesnt matter who you are in the company- everyone is treated the same in terms of the free travel perks. and for obvious reasons- if your family members are traveling without you they will get prioritized lower on the standby list.
if you do get the job definitely take advantage of the travel benefits. I know i certainly did. It's the best in the business from what i've heard.

No, you can only have a spouse or significant other, but not both.

:D If you had both, ideally you'd want to keep those two as far away as possible, of course! Maybe the flight would be away from the spouse, to get to the significant other.....

Kids are only if they are under 18 or a full time student. The policy changed just after I joined JetBlue. It use to be your kids could fly no matter what age as long as you were a crewmember. Those of us hired before the change are grandfathered in but the children policy is pretty much the same as all other airlines. Not to mention you get quarterly buddy passes that you can hand out to whomever you want.

Humm, close but not quite right. While anyone with a company ID can ride non rev on the Flight attendants extra seats (3 on the 320, 1 on the 190) the flight attendants from B6 have priority over anyone else on the seniority check in list. If there are 4 people listed non rev, one is an FA, one pilot, one ground, and it's a full load 190, the Fa will be boarded first, and sitting in the extra jumpseat.
Good luck with the job interview. I live in Tampa and during training at JBU I stayed at the hotel, provided by B6, until our early release saturday, then I'd drive home, and return Sunday night. It was a much needed break.
Let us know how you make out.

I call my recruiter twice a week but she doesn't call me back. I'm thinking they just haven't put together a good enough class for training. How many people were in your training?

My fingerprinting was in April, and my class began the last week of May, but that was a while ago. The class had about 20 people (half GO, half Provo).

Hello all,
Im new here. Just to throw in my 2 cents. I love this industry and worked most of my life as a ramp agent with Comair before I was laid off last year in September. I had an offshore job but the time away from my family was too hard on them even though the money was good. I now am trying to get back in the airline biz. I live in Orlando and just applied yesterday (2/11) when I saw that JB was hiring for PT ground ops. I am hoping I get the job and hope the process don't take too long.

B6 should watch out. Rumor (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/southwest-rapid-rewards/923234-new-city-announcement-forthcoming-boston-bos-perhaps.html) has it that SW might be moving into Beantown.

I recently lost my (non-airline) job, and the first thing I did (literally, 9 AM the next morning) was check out JB careers and put together a cover letter for a position in yield management. Full day of interviews tomorrow!!! I am so psyched.
Good luck to all my fellow applicants, though perhaps not if you're applying for the same job :)

The rumor about WN has been around for a while. The only gates that are/will become available in BOS are the E gates after NW leaves for A, as well as FL's old D gates. Either way that is 4 gates in E or 4 gates in D, or 8 gates as they can/do share an interconnecting walkway.

Great thread folks. Question, how hard is it to get into the sales/marketing side of B6? Also do they have positions like that at IAD? I filled out the careers page on the website and attached my resume and get job updates every so often but mostly for Ground ops, which is something my body cant handle anymore. I have a sales background and am interested in getting into the B6 Sales/Marketing side of things. Any ideas or pointers would be great even if it is possible that they have something like that at IAD being it is not a Hub for B6.
Thanks again

orientation is 2 full days sitting and listening to people talk about the history of the company, policies, and getting fitted for your uniforms. at least you get paid..but its pretty boring.
training is a bunch of tests and tutorials done via computer/online. It will be based on customer service as well as the reservations system. There will be an instructor that will teach you obviously. I don't remember exactly but you must get at least a 70 or 80% on every test. Most people pass, but there were 3 people in my class that got sent home.

What ARE the basics that one should study??? I am a newbee here and will start my first day of training in orlando tomorrow for G.O. I haven't studied anything and I'm not sure what I could study?
Also, I hear that on the first day you submit your list of s/o or husband / wife, kids and parents names for flight benefits. Does that mean that these benefits will be available immediately?
Thanks for any info that can be provided.

Yes. Technically you can use the benefits on the first day, they will give you a card that you need to fill out (I believe you need a copy of your/kids birth cert. to add parents and children) and can fax or email this card to crewtravel. Normally it takes them a few working days to make changes.

Well for the record, the first 2 days are for orientation and while they say you are a crew member from that point on we didn't get our badges until the 3rd day which is when the actual departmental training started.
I made all kinds of plans to go to Cancun for the weekend and then wisely (I believe) changed my mind for that just in case situation where I couldn't make it back in time.
As for the Wife, S/O, kids, and parents, as soon as you send in proper documentation (marriage certificate for wife, your own birth certificate for parents... and I don't have kids so I'm not sure what for them) they say it takes up to a week before they are added.
So far everyone seems to be very happy here. I see smiles on everyone's faces and not just when they are obviously being looked at. That says something I think. I'm excited to be on board with this company.
