California - Vietnamese restaurant in San Diego
Will be traveling to SD in February and would like to enjoy true ethinic foods. One I cannot experience in the midwest is Vietnamese but would love recomendations for other types eg. specific names of restaurants. Thanks!!

We enjoy this simple and good Vietnamese restaurant:
Pho T Cali (http://www.photcali.com/)
7351 Clairemont Mesa Blvd
Thanks for the suggestion!! I cannot tell from the picture but is this in a shopping center area or a stand alone building? It was neat to see the menu.

It's in a strip shopping center, on the fringe of a large Asian area.
My daughter tells me that venue often provides very good ethnic food. They visited a restaurant which was too authentic for her tastes when they visisted SD. They have lived in Asia for 8 years so they are familiar with the real food.
Is there any other ethnic restaurant you would recommend from your experience. We are staying near downtown SD but are not limiting our exploration to the Gaslight district, for example. What about Greek?

It's been awhile since I've been to a Greek restaurant. Let's hope someone else comes along with some knowledge on that. Here are some places I like:
Jasmines (http://www.jasmineseafood.com/jsr/html/home.html) for great dim sum
4609 Convoy St.
Aladdin Cafe (http://aladdincafe.com/) for Middle Eastern food
5420 Clairemont Mesa Blvd. San Diego, CA 92117
And my very most favorite place for dessert:
Extraordinary Desserts (http://extraordinarydesserts.com/)
There are two locations, one very close to Balboa Park. I've switched to the Union Street location, as it is much larger. The 5th Avenue shop is tiny, and the line can sometimes be long. Union Street always has seats.
Fabulous desserts - both to the eye and to the mouth.

I can't think of a great Greek place right off the top of my head, but if you are looking for ethnic food one of my favorite places is Siamese Basil in Encinitas. It's a bit of a drive north, but worth it IMO.

Masala (http://www.masalarestaurant.com/) in the gaslamp is very good Indian food, but not cheap. IMHO Indian food in San Diego is mostly either rather bland (most of the downtown/La Jolla resteraunts) or a bit too aunthentic (little India), but Masla gets it just right.

San Diego Magazine does a nice job with its issue on "Best of Restaurants" (http://www.sandiegomagazine.com/media/San-Diego-Magazine/Department-Archive/index.php?tagID=42).
