Was just wondering what sort of experiences can I expect in and out of ANC? Do they have a gold canopy service? I love not having to interact with anyone, just grab my car and go.

No Gold Canopy service. There is a single desk in the North Terminal for all rentals, with two sets of lines (long snake for regular rentals, walk-up counter (usually on the left side as you face the desk) for Gold. All of the cars are in the 5 rows to the right of the door as you exit into the garage from the desk. They give you a receipt tab for the garage attendant, since they share the lot with the actual pay-for-parking customers.

Return is at a remote lot, which has never been staffed on any occasion that I have been there. Park the vehicle, note the mileage and space number on your contract envelope and take the bus back to the North Terminal (or walk, it is not really that far), where you have to go back to the desk to complete the return.

The hours are open until the wee hours of the morning (since many flights to/from CONUS occur in the late evening/post-midnight timeframe).

As far as terminal experiences once you have returned your vehicle, I can only comment on DL (which is in the South Terminal). You will wait in the public areas until exactly one hour prior to the departure time, at which time you will be permitted to access the TSA checkpoint to clear through to the departure lounge. There is a bar on the gate level where DL flies out, which is open until the 0100 flight departure.

Oh, forgot to mention - during the snowy months, I have never received a car with a clean exterior. While the interiors have been cleaned, I get the impression that they do not worry about the outsides, probably for the combined reason of not wanting to coat the car in ice due to temperature, and the futility of keeping a car clean with all of the road conditions of ANC in the snowy season.

This must be old information. We were in ANC in late August - early September, flew in/out on United (no longer serving ANC, but was in the North Terminal at the time), and used Hertz. There is a new consolidated rental car center open. The center is across from the South Terminal. If you are flying in/out the North Terminal and have companions, I suggest having one person go get the car while the others wait with the luggage....getting to the rental car counters from North Terminal is a death march with luggage. There is no Gold canopy service; the set-up at the rental counter is very similar to what is described above (i.e. separate line for Gold). Return is in the same location (no remote lot).

Thanks for the update/correction. The last time I was there was last March, and the consolidated center was not open, still had all of the counters on the lower level of the North Terminal.

In this new facility they sure do have enough car washes (6 I think) - had the 'grand tour' a couple weeks ago... pretty schweet complex...:D

In some ways, a rather unique location - it's the only place anyone has tried to "upgrade" me from a B class to a Ford Excursion.

DevilDog438's original post was mostly accurate for the time of his rental, except he got the north and south terminals mixed up. DL arrived in the north terminal and the rental cars were in the basement of the south terminal. The parking garage and remote return lot were attached to the south terminal, too.

The reason the cars' exterior appearance was not perfect in the wintertime was because all of the rental agencies' car washes were off-site and the cars had to be driven about a half mile to the parking garage. The cars were cleaned at these off-site facilities, but due to the winter conditions, they got dirty even in the short drive to the parking garage. Pretty much unavoidable.

The new facility (opened in July 2007) is attached to the south terminal and indeed has on-site car washes (yup, beckoa--6) and full detailing facilities. It's linked up to the south terminal by an underground tunnel. It is a bit of a pain to transit between the terminals with luggage, but the airport does provide a shuttle that runs between the terminals approximately every 15 minutes (sometimes more often). Ask the driver to let you off at the closest stop to the rental facility--you'll need to cross the road and enter through the doors on the front of the facility.

North terminal airlines are currently DL, CO, US and Sun Country, plus all international airlines. All other airlines (AS, NW, AA, and F9) are in the south terminal.

The airport is currently constructing a landside indoor connection between the terminals (hopefully with moving walkways!). Not sure what the estimated completion date is, but it should make connecting between terminals much easier (still a long way, but at least it's not outside and will be easier to roll suitcases/carts).

Last time I checked, Hertz is open 6a-2a in the winter and possibly 5:30a-3a in the summer.

Their direct number if you have any questions for them is 907.243.4118 x0.
