Travel Technology - Convert docx file to Word
Mac users - help?
My 'vista friends' keeping sending me word documents in docx format and I can't read them. I'm still running Microsoft Office 2004. Is there a solid conversion utility application out there - tried to do a search on versiontracker.com without much luck....
google turned up this shareware: docXConverter (for Mac OS X) 3.1
Thanks

try this from microsoft:
http://www.microsoft.com/mac/downloads.mspx
and if the link doesn't download, here is a link from versiontracker.com
http://www.versiontracker.com/dyn/moreinfo/macosx/32498
also, if all else fails, if you are running leopard, TextEdit s/b able to open a word 2007 .docx.zip file and save it as word 97, word 2003 or back as a word 2007 docx file

You can also ask your friends to save their files in .doc format in Word 2007.
Free OpenOffice (http://download.openoffice.org/other.html#en-US)3 will read, but not write .docx
You may be able to use OpenOffice instead of the whole MS Office suite, though this varies by the person's requirements
You can also ask your friends to save their files in .doc format in Word 2007.
That's asking a lot :)
Thanks for everyone's help on this. Will try out as suggested....

I have been able to open some docx files that Word '04 for Mac couldn't crack in Google Apps. Once you open them there, you can export them or copy/paste into a new Word doc.

Not really. If they intend to interoperate with others (doesn't matter if they are on a PC or Mac), they really need to be saving it in the older word format. Not everybody has word 2007. They probably just don't know that.

You know, it really isn't asking a lot. I have Office 2007 on one laptop and Office 2003 and have set my defaults to save everything in the older format. No big deal.
Or, if you only need to read the files, they could send them to you as PDFs. I do that all the time when I send Excel files to people who don't use Excel.
