I have a colleague who is Japanese and wants to get a smartphone. He is mostly interested in being able to read email in both English and Japanese. He doesn't intend to send email at all, but may text occasionally.

Does anyone have experience with Japanese on the AT&T Blackberry Bold? Will it display kanji and kana out of the box? I'm assuming Japanese input is difficult.

He had been considering an iPhone but is concerned that, even though he won't input text very often, to the extent he does, he'll have a hard time with the iPhone.

I do not know if the BB Bold supports Japonese out of the box(although I think it can be added), but the BB8707h does natively support Japonese out of the box.

It is sold by NTT DoCoMo in Japon and RIM directy to US customers.

the 8707h displays kanji but doesn't allow you to enter it - no blackberry does as far as I am aware. And that is true whether you buy it from DoCoMo or RIM.
