There "tech support" is somewhat nonresponsive. jg70124 Jan 9, 09, 5:07 pm I used Vindigo from 2000 until 2007. AFAIK, they have not done any development or database updates since late 2006. What's your problem? Landing Gear Jan 9, 09, 5:14 pm On both my XP SP3 machines it won't install. On my SP2 machine, it's fine. That means that once I get rid of the SP2 machine, I will no longer be able to re-install Vindigo if I need to. By the way, the content is still being updated and I still think it's a good program. Any clues? jg70124 Jan 9, 09, 5:19 pm Sorry, guess I can't help. It installs fine for me (Windows XP SP3). sbm12 Jan 9, 09, 5:21 pm On both my XP SP3 machines it won't install. ... Any clues? Have you tried running the installer in compatibility mode? Right-click on the installer icon, choose properties, then the compatibility tab and see if one of the lower SP levels works. Landing Gear Jan 9, 09, 5:22 pm Sorry, guess I can't help. It installs fine for me (Windows XP SP3). Wow! May I ask which machine? The ones I can't get to work are a Sony and a Toshiba. The Sony was a direct install of SP3 while the Toshiba was SP2 upgraded to SP3. Landing Gear Jan 9, 09, 5:23 pm Have you tried running the installer in compatibility mode? Right-click on the installer icon, choose properties, then the compatibility tab and see if one of the lower SP levels works. I'll first have to re-download it. Would you explain "compatibility mode" to me? jg70124 Jan 9, 09, 5:35 pm Lenovo (IBM) thinkpad X61s upgraded from XP SP 2. Landing Gear Jan 9, 09, 5:39 pm Lenovo (IBM) thinkpad X61s upgraded from XP SP 2. Hmm. Which firewall? jg70124 Jan 9, 09, 5:41 pm Hmm. Which firewall? Windows built-in Landing Gear Mar 5, 09, 10:56 pm Just to follow up, here's a dialogue between me and the Washington Post tech columnist from earler today. The column is available at http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/discussion/2009/03/03/DI2009030301060.html Brooklyn, N.Y.: Do you have any idea what happened to the Palm application Vindigo? I received an e-mail from them saying they were going out of business yet their application is still synching. Rob Pegoraro: I wouldn't expect it to keep syncing for too long. That company, incidentally, represents one of the bigger missed opportunities in gadgetry. Years before there was an iPhone or a Yelp, they had a street-level database of food/dining/entertainment options. I don't know what happened, but the company's inability to exploit that head start is what the kids call an EPIC FAIL. Boraxo Mar 7, 09, 11:50 pm I used to love Vindigo during my Palm days, but once I switched to an iPod touch that was it for V. Too bad, it was a great program. It was kind of buggy, I would periodically lose all my favorites which is one reason I dumped it. So it doesn't surprise me if yours cratered. JadedTraveler Mar 8, 09, 9:53 am I used to use -- past tense -- Vindigo when I first got a Palm M515. But quickly developed a very low opinion of them over come CC billing issues. Experiences similar to this fellow's on here: Beware of Vindigo renewal via iBill (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-technology/283043-beware-vindigo-renewal-via-ibill.html). I remember the quote "scams, frauds and general shady dealings". That's how I remember this thread, to search for those words. In fact, my experiences with Vindigo are what started me down the path of using virtual cc #s for anything remotely shady sounding, and for everything with an automatic renewal. Discussed here: Which virtual credit card do you use? (http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/travel-technology/837336-virtual-credit-card-do-you-use.html) CitiCorp -- maybe not long for this life -- has a nice desktop app for their credit cards named "Virtual Account Numbers" that makes the process of using virtual/disposable account numbers almost seamless. I should use it more often. |
