For an upcoming trip, I want a GPS unit for about a week. Rental car company wants $12/day - they're smokin' something.

On amazon.com, there's a Magellan Maestro 3200 3.5-Inch Portable GPS Navigator (Factory Refurbished) for $83, only a couple bucks more than the rental company, and I can keep it if I ever need it again.

Would you buy a refurbished unit? any experiences with that model?

And something I've wondered about, are there any ongoing costs to use a GPS system? Membership required for satellite access, things like that?

I'm going to be house hunting in a city I'm only partially familiar with and need to use my time as efficiently as possible, hence the desire the GPS.

negative to ongoing costs, however if you want to get new maps for the unit for say.....South America or European cities....you would have to buy them separate (just as you would buy a software product that you later on load to the GPS)

I only have experience with the nuvi from garmin......work perfectly.......I too bought one after using one in Oklahoma City (visiting relatives and did some driving it was awesome)

the unit (we paid 200) has already paid itself against what we would have paid rental agencies for it

Great resource...

Check to see if there are any reviews of this unit.

IIRC, the Magellan 3200 does not have text-to-speech, which, for me, is a dealbreaker. Text-to-speech (rather than saying, "Turn right in 500 feet," it says, "Turn right on Maple Street in 500 feet," is absolutely necessary, IMHO.

I have a Garmin Nuvi 770 and love it.

If you spend a bit more, you could get a really good quality unit on sale.
