...rumor that...the building will be capped (roofed) at its current height...If the rumor holds true, at 24 floors, it will still make a good sized boutique hotel...more like "best sized" considering it would be the smallest high end property, excluding mansion. (400 rooms minus 3 floors = ?) i cant imagine that will happen, but it would certainly be nice.

I suppose this is good news as it opens up views from Aria and Veer, although even as a smaller boutique hotel I think I'd still rather buy a condo in the Mandarin Oriental.
I'm not a fan of the Light Group so maybe it's a good thing they're giving up management. Who's going to take it over, though?
Of course, the prices they're asking for on these things are still an utter joke.
Interesting mention in yesterday's RJ that the centerpiece tower is leaning about twice as much as they had planned it to - and they're trying to figure out what to do about it. I tried to find a link on their website but no luck.

Good find, laspvg! Lvrj.com sure could use a better search tool. And, yes, you're right, the story is "talk" at this point - not that everything in Norm's columns aren't always true. ;)

Looks like the Harmon "rumor" is now "fact".
"The company said the Harmon Hotel will not open until the end of 2010 and the Harmon’s residential condominium portion is being canceled. "
...
"When it’s completed about a year behind schedule, the Harmon will have 400 hotel rooms and be about half as tall as its originally planned 47 stories."

Perini is expected to complete the Harmon tower to its new 26-floor height and its exterior. The building will be lighted and appear finished, but won’t be occupied.
MGM Mirage said 88 of the Harmon’s residential units were under contract to be sold. Purchasers are entitled to receive refunds of their deposits.
26 floors is still 1 short of the 27 that the hotel was originally planned to occupy. maybe its simply a naming thing.

To bad Starwood or Hyatt did not get in on this project :(
It would be nice to have a nice non gaming option for those chains close to the strip(such as Marriott has in the Renaissance)So many new rooms-it really will be a visitors market for a few years.

i presume you mean citycenter in general not harmon.
hilton cancelled their nongaming conrad/waldorf.
mainstream chains wouldnt be interested in the size that MO/harmon were/are. higher end would be. and thats exactly what MGM wanted.

I think a W hotel would do just fine on/near the strip.Much better than the MO will do=traditional top end luxury is already there in over abundence for those who really have the dough.Hip high end is really what is lacking IMO.
I know there were plans-but those were scrapped.
There were also plans for a Hyatt between City Center and Bellagio-but I think that folded also.
A nice Hyatt In Hughes center would be very welcome.

only harmon will be hip high end IMHO.
palms place isnt bad at 599 condohotel units. and the penthouses are the cheapest private pools, from $2K.
upcoming MO competes with FS.
original W plans had a casino.
still a chance W might end up managing cosmopolitan though.

* hyatt (grand hyatt) was original management co.
* hilton cancelled conrad/waldorf. depending on the current state of condo sales, they might like this as a replacement. theyve also been rebranding waldorfs like crazy recently.
mgm certainly isnt interested now.
this would actually be better than original W project, especially if they dont restrict residential rentals. - there are several penthouses with fairly large private pools.
actually come to think of it, does hilton have any 100% condohotels? maybe its really just between GH and W.
You have to wonder about the remaining construction. Of course, all that rebar is concealed now. Are they sure that it was done correctly? I think I'll avoid this place completely. JMHO.

theyre only going up another 2 or 3 floors.

I'm worried about the construction on floor one, two, etc. Perhaps the rebar wasn't inspected as well as the higher floors. It's a little scary.
