MilesBuzz! - 40,000 Membership Rewards points...where to transfer them
I'll be closing down my Amex, and need to transfer out a little over 40K MR points.
I see that Delta has a 15% bonus in December; however, US has a lower reward threshold. But, I have the US jitters due to their financial health, as I won't be using those miles anytime soon.
Any suggestions? I want to get as much bang for the buck as possible.

I can't help you choose where to put your miles, but just wanted to warn you to not cancel your AMEX until after you decide what to do. Once your MR acct is closed (due to cancelling your AMEX card), your points will be forfeited after 30 days.
Also, the current Delta 15% bonus ends Dec 15, and you need to register ahead of time at:
DELTA.COM/MEMBERSHIPREWARDS (http://delta.com/skymiles/getmiles/creditcard_partners/cc_lto/transferbonus/index.jsp?offer=membershiprewards)
Also be aware, it takes 2-3 months for the bonus points to show up on your Skymiles acct!!!!!
Good Luck!!!!!

If you have a Southwest Airlines Account.... 40,000 MR points would be 2 RR tickets and they post very quickly from Amex to Southwest Airlines too.

You can take them to Continental. From there you can take them to Amtrak. Then from Amtrak to United (in 25K chunks per calendar year.)

Mine all go into Starwood and have a very large 6 figure balance right now. Not a great 'exchange rate' I know but sooooooooo flexible and I can move them to any useful airline on earth pretty much. As the 1000s (/) of FT'ers and family and friends who flew Concorde can affirm after a transfer to Qantas. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif It is a nice safe "central bank".
Bear in mind I have been getting TWO MR miles per $1US spent effectively for couple years due to bad exchange rate here. And Amex here had a 50% bonus on for last few months anyway. http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/wink.gif
Not to mention I use them for central SYD hotels at 1600 miles and $25 a night as I did last week. A Hilton would run 30,000-40,000 type level a night, so the "exchange rate" is highly misleading at times. Apples v/s apples is what you need to compare.

Yes, make sure the transfer is completed. I recently was close to the $85 MR annual fee time of the year, so I decided to convert it to the Options Program (2:1 redemption) - I didn't realise until AFTER I tried to redeem existing poionts that I could only redeem 2000 MR for 1000 airline miles... and these were all points earned while I was a full $85 member. So apparently once you change your status to the options program - all existing MR points in your account loose half their value at redemption... and mostly, if you try to cancel Membership rewards, they try to keep you on the options program... not telling you that you lost half the value of your miles while redeeming. They should change it to you earning 1:2 rather than redeeming 2:1 luckily, I only had 1000 MR points....

May I ask you the reason for closing your MR account? Have you found a better alternative as far as mileage cards are concerned? If yes, could you please share with the board.
Thanks
