I'll be working near Detroit during the week of 12/29 and figured I'd go down to Detroit with a friend for 12/31. She really wants to see fireworks and find a nice place to go. I can't find fireworks anywhere in Detroit except ~30 minutes north of the city. Does anyone know if the city has fireworks or any recommendations for something to do?
I figure we'll stay at the DoubleTree Shelby downtown since I'm a Hilton guy.
I appreciate any input. Thanks & enjoy your holidays... hopefully without work!

Detroit does its big fireworks show circa the last week of June, first week of July as part of an International Freedom Festival.
Being outside at midnight New Year's eve is *not* recommended because there's a tradition that some people still follow of firing their guns into the air and all those bullets wind up somewhere !
It's been very cold and snowy in Detroit the past few days, found out last night that the minus sign on the car thermometer really does work.

I might recommend going to Greenfield Village in Dearborn and staying either at the Dearborn Inn which is run by Marriott or the Ritz Carlton down the road. Both are lovely as is Greenfield village. Not sure about fireworks, but certainly nicer than downtown detroit.

Thanks to you both for the replies. I'll look into the Dearborn stuff. We also found a bit of stuff for First Night in Port Huron. It's a bit of a hike and Port Huron isn't great, but we'd get to see fireworks & the Hampton down the road (with whirlpools) suites my Hilton obsession.
If there are more suggestions, we're open to them!

If you're willing not to stay at a Hilton property, you might want to consider the Thomas Edison Inn -- right on the "river".
