Or it this an oxymoron? I will be traveling first between Cancun and Tulum by bus and then from Cancun to San Cristobal de las Casas and then from San Cristobal to Tuxtla de Gutierrez. I know that there is bus service between all these points but would like to do some planning about necessary departure times and likely arrival times as well. Is there a source for these schedules that is relatively reliable?

I have taken buses between all of these routes. The mexican bus system is very reliable. First class buses almost always leave and arrive on time, are comfortable, have movies (in spanish sometimes and always too loud) and the A/C is kicking so wear a sweater.

Local buses are much cheaper and take the slow routes through towns dropping off and picking up and are less reliable and comfortable at a usual 75% discount from 1st class cost.

The 2nd class bus from Cancun to Tulum is fine, leaves hourly from the bus station. Drops you off in Tulum center, not near the beaches (a few km) so you'll need to colectivo or taxi it to the hotels/ruins though there are some hostels in the center but recommend a cabana on the beach rather than the hostel.

Colectivos also can take you cancun to tulum but not sure where exactly to pick it up, usually on the highway entrance.

ADO is one of the top bus companies operating in that area and will have overnight buses from Cancun to San Cristobal. The buses are comfortable enough but no one yet in Mexico has thought to introduce a flat bed service like you find in Argentina and Brazil etc. You'll find ADO has a website, as do all the Mexican bus companies: just google it. You'll probably be able to book online too, but this is not really necessary since buses are rarely full. There is also a website called Ticketbus, which gathers together info and a booking engine for a number of companies.

As usual, just the kind of information I was hoping for. Thanks so much.
