I was dropping my rental off at LAS on Saturday night and I saw a Porsche Cayenne next to the Gold Board as the managers special. The porsche did not have any barcodes on the vehicle as do all Hertz Rentals. I searched the tread and I found that some FTers have seen these cars at DFW, LAX. Has anyone rented one of these before. How do you book it, doesnt seem you can at Hertz.com. What is the going rate?

I "got" one at LAS this past November instead of an Audi Q7. I think they go for around $250 a day. My advice... stick with the Audi Q7. The Cayenne I got (actually, the ones I saw as well) were a base version, I mean really base. It had absolutely no options (just a radio/cd player and power tailgate). Not only that, the quality is horendous. The car looks really cheap inside. If we were in the 90's this car would be OK. BTW, the Cayenne I had (as well as the other ones) did have bar codes.

Big Mac hit the nail on the head. The Cayenne outside of the "S" version are really pathetic attempts at a high end SUV. The base engine is anemic when you consider the manufacturer, scratch that, for any manufacturer.
HP:
Base: 290
S: 385
GTS: 405
Turbo: 500
Turbo S: 550
Keep in mind this vehicle has a base weight of 4,784 with the Turbo S topping out at 5,192 pounds.

Wow. I would take an Escalade over the Porsche any day. In fact I would drive/buy a GT Mustang over a Boxster or 911.
A Porsche is all about the name, the quality is not there. Neither is the reliability.
Why would I pay more to rent to buy something that is not as good as something cheaper?

Thats a little unreasonable !
A Mustang is a piece of trash and for that judgement you dont even need to compare it to any other automobile. It is quite tacky as well.
The Porsche 911 is still one of the best sports cars on the market worldwide and to my knowledge absolutely reliable !
May I ask what your sources are or which specific problems you had with the 911 ?

I have know 2 people that have a a Parsche. One with a 911 and one with a Boxster. Both were always in the shop for normal maintenance, squeaky and rattly interiors, and uncomfortable as all get out. The Boxster didn't even have cupholders! If I remember right the audio system sucked in the 911! Maintenance bills were outrageous every month.
Over 500/600 a month for a warranty inspection/glorified oil change. Get out of here with that. The payment on the car and that bill each month would be well over 1000 or 1500 a month. I could by 3 normalish cars and maintain them for that...

Hence why this is Hertz Rent-a-Car not Hertz Buy-a-Car... ;)
My mission is always to try something new. I've discovered lots of cars that are fine to drive but that I'd never buy for many of the reasons you stated. Were I in LAS, I'd give the Cayenne a boot.
