I expect to have a 2-night stopover in Houston on a DL/ CO award enroute to Mexico in January: Thu. 8PM--Sat. 11 AM. I'm into karaoke, Irish pubs, 60s--70s--80s rock & pop. I'm a straight & single man, friendly, talkative, & sociable to strangers. My favorite ethnic cuisines are Chinese, Thai, Vietnamese, Greek, & Mexican.
Where should I get a hotel? What neighborhoods are best, also for sightseeing Fri. daytime?

There are a number of things to do in Houston.

The Battleship Texas (http://www.tpwd.state.tx.us/spdest/findadest/parks/battleship_texas/) is located near the San Jacinto Monument and Museum (http://www.sanjacinto-museum.org/).

There is also the Houston Museum District (http://www.houstonmuseumdistrict.org/default.asp?id=1) which is south of downtown and located near the Medical Center.

You can check out Discovery Green (http://www.discoverygreen.com/), a giant park downtown, which has a few new and well regarded restaurants.

As for Mexican food, there are a few options. Here in Texas we have true Mexican food and Tex-Mex, which is what a lot of other states pass off as "Mexican". I will try to post as many options as I can think of (I'm sure others will chime in), but I may not post them until tomorrow.

We also have a good amount of Thai and Vietnamese food in Houston and I'll post my favorites tomorrow.

As far as neighborhoods are concerned, you can check out Midtown (http://www.houstonmidtown.com/), which has a good amount of bars and restaurants and is in close proximity to downtown. There is also the Houston Heights (http://www.houstonheights.org/index.htm) (where I live) that has a bunch of historic homes, some great restaurants, and is also close to downtown.

This is a small list. I'll try to post more tomorrow.
