Transfer photos from SD card to device without internet/laptop?

Hi All,

I will be traveling for three weeks without a laptop. I will have a canon SD630 point and shoot digital camera with a SD card. I will be taking lots of photos and I also want a backup incase I lose/camera gets stolen while on vacation.

Can anyone tell me any suggestions on how to go about this? I would like to transfer photos to a 2nd storage without a computer, and without going to an internet cafe.

I thought using the iPod Photo Connector (http://support.apple.com/kb/TA38187?viewlocale=en_US) would do the trick, however, it doesn't work with an ipod touch. This would have been the preferred solution as I could upload and view the photos on the touch as well.

I also did a search and found this useful article
http://news.cnet.com/8301-13580_3-9873563-39.html however it's a bit old and there may be new technical solutions released recently.

Any suggestions would be helpful as i'm leaving in less than a week, thank you

I bought a little device in BKK that had a hard drive and copied my memory cards to the hard drive quite quickly. I used it for the one trip and then packed it for last summer's trip to Croatia. Upon trying to use it it was dead and I have not been able to revive it so in the trash it goes (saving the drive of course!). We just went to local photo shops as they all have systems to copy cards to DVD-R.

To replace the unit, and looking at the cost differential with the Wolverine, I am just going to purchase a Netbook for future personal travels. This will also give me a quick way to connect to Wifi to send pictures home to family, edit the pictures, etc.

We just had a discussion on Portable Storage Devices (PSD's) over on the Photography Forum

Thanks all - the Epson P-7000 is probably the best solution, however, reviews say it's bulky. Plus, i want something I can use all the time even when I'm not on vacation.

Therefore, the proposed solution I'd go for would be an uploading the pictures onto an iPod touch. Problem is i can't seem to find an accessory that will work with an ipod Touch.... the apple camera connector doesn't work with the touch - does anyone know any accessories which will?

I did try the Apple Camera Connector on my 60Gb iPod (pre-touch) and had lots of problems. What I found was that when transferring over my photos (8 Megapixel so approx 3-3.5Mb each in size) was that after about 130 pictures the iPod would be out of battery. It seems that the hard drive spins continuously when copying so there was just NO battery life even starting off with a fully charged battery. There was also no way to copy just a range of photos other than trying to save them in different folders on the SD card and then copying each of those separately. Basically, it was more frustration than anything.

I'm not sure how much different the battery stamina is on the Touch but beware.

Thanks, from what i'm reading the camera connector doesn't work too well, so your post is inline with that.

It would be great if i could copy via the touch...can't seem to find a similar accessory

You could go to a Photo Shop and have the SD burned to CD or DVD disk.
