But one cannot book CX2885 for LAX-YVR portion only. I assume CX has no passenger traffic rights just to carry pax between LAX-YVR only.

Regardless, don't know the exact reason for them to operate this flight.

Reason for this flight is most likely to cater for students/business travel to North America during the first two weeks of Jan, as pretty much all Economy Class seats are sold out to LAX for the first two weeks. But it looks that that extra flight is full in Y already. As for why YVR-HKG, I have no idea.

I think the reason for YVR is to as fuel stop, and plus it can pick up holiday makers from YVR back to Hong Kong, possible change crew and aviod unplanned stop @ ICN or TPE
