I have to agree with bizclassboy. I'm happy with the 50 lb limit believe it or not. I remember years ago flying to India every other month, our bags were stuffed at 70 lbs because things weren't available in India. Now everything is available there from Mont Blanc pens, to Kraft Chedder Cheese slices. There is nothing left to carry back and forth. I imagine the other destinations CX flies to are the same way.

Lastly, in such a price sensitive business, airlines would rather have someone pay 25 USD/bag to carry 70 lbs than increase the fare 25 USD for everyone and let everyone carry 70 lbs.

Well IMHO, I think some people might need the 70lbs baggage limit back. A concrete example would be those students studying abroad (especially when they're just getting started). They might fly back home only for once in a while and need to put some extra stuffs inside their luggage, unlike those more frequent travelers - businessmen.

But then again, no matter what decision the airliners are making, some will benefit from it while some won't :)

Students on overseas study fares to/from US/Canada can have three pieces of checked luggage @23kg each.

UA actually charges $150 for overweight bag fee, beyond 23kg in Coach. So for $25 for CX, it is considered a huge bargain.

You have to purchase the Overseas Study Fare package to get this additional allowance:

And I assume these fares are more expensive than the usual fares? Or are they even cheaper?

I have no idea. You can check with CX or a TA. The ticket must be originated from HKG. As a side note, I always purchase SFO-HKG-SFO instead of HKG-SFO-HKG because ex-SFO fares are normally less expensive than ex-HKG.
