I always thought that there is a Hilton in Cape Town? i am sure I have seen it, butg it does seem to have vanished. Does anybody know if Hilton are opeining new properties for the 2010 World Cup? At the moment the situation is rather bleak.

Surely they must be doing something for the WorldCup - don't you think? I have stayed a few times in the J'burg one and enjoyed the Sushi makeing course ;-)
But I was hopeing to take my wife in late 2010 (therefore after the WorldCup) and would rather be able to also visit Cape Town. As I said, I am sure that I saw one there in about 2000. I might me going senile, but I thought that starts a bit later. Does anybody know if I am right or not?

Well, Paris Hilton was in Cape Town earlier this year, but I think that's the only (if tenuous!) connection I can recall between "Hilton" and "Cape Town." ;)

Cape Town has never had a Hilton. Only major chain with a Cape Town presence has been Sheraton.

As an aside--stayed at the Durban Hilton last year. Great property--among the best Hiltons I have ever stayed at anywhere in the world. Location is a slight disadvantage--about three blocks from the beach but the walk is probably less than 100% safe. But it's really a convention hotel--adjacent to the Convention Center.

Only major chain with a Cape Town presence has been Sheraton.... apart from IHG brands - an InterContinental and several Holiday Inns/HI Garden Courts.

You're the who said has been. ;) OK, they're gone now, but there is now a Holiday Inn Express so IHG is still present.

FWIW, was just in Cape Town, and the soccer stadium is still under construction, amid a fair amount of controversy. Long story short, there's serious question whether the infrastructure there is really going to be able to cut the mustard. Plus, it's an open secret that other countries are already standing in line to step in if SA has to bail at the last minute.

The stadium in Cape Town is in a primo location if they finish it, but there are serious questions about access, parking, city services, and yes, hotel space. The locals are upset that so much valuable public land has been used for a massive stadium that will basically be used to its capacity once.

It's not a happy subject down there.
