I am at the Pier in Hong Kong, Dec. 6, enroute back to the US at the end of our disatrous vacation in Thailand (more on that and our outbound CX flights when I get home). And here you all thought I'd never be flying on CX again. I was lucky to be able to have AA change our award seats from BKK on JAL to NRT Dec. 6 to CX flights KL-HKG-NRT, after buying a flight to KL from Phuket (very expensive) then onward to ORD on JAL tomorrow as planned. And we even got business seats on the CX flights! I'm not sure if I should thank CX or AA, whoever took pity on the refugees from Thailand.

Didn't have "government protesters shut down airport" as one of the contingencies? What could you have been thinking?!!?

Yes it is ironic that after all of us doubters said to susiesan "calm down, everything will be alright" she gets caught up in the BKK fracas.

I'm confused by this. Many flights have flown from BKK to NRT today (6 December). It looks like susiesan panicked and changed her plan when she didn't need to.

I didn`t panic prematurely-normal flight schedule from BKK has not resumed yet.

When we arrived back to Phuket last Saturday Nov. 29 no one knew how long the Bangkok airport would be closed. So I made two plans-I changed our flights to Cambodia to go to directly Siem Riep on Wednesday on Bangkok Airways skipping Phnom Penh as BangkokAir had already cancelled that portion of the trip, and hoped things would get back to normal by Wednesday and we could still go to Cambodia, to the temples. But I also wanted to be sure we could get to Tokyo to meet our original JL flight NRT-ORD on Sunday Dec. 7, so I called the travel insurance. They put us on a flight to KL on Friday Dec. 5, the soonest we could get out of Phuket (which cost $250 each one way). Then the insurance called AA and got our award tickets switched to CX flights KL-HKG-NRT on Dec. 6. So we`d make it to our original flight on Dec. 7 to ORD. I booked hotels in KL and NRT online myself. And here we are now, in the JL lounge at Narita homeward bound.

Even if the original JL flight from BKK-NRT had flown last night, I don`t know if we would have been able to fly from Phuket to Bangkok in time to make it.

More details about the CX parts of the vacation from hell when I get home tomorrow. And I have start the fight with the travel insurance to get compensated for all of this. if this wasn`t trip delay/cancellation/interuption I don`t know what is.

You can be sure I will for my next trip to Italy in April. You can never be too sure about those Romans. Hasn't the Rome airport been the subject of a bombing or two once before in the 70's or 80's? Uh oh. I have 4 1/2 months to fret about it.

Don't forget about the eruption of Mt Vesuvius in 79AD.

Not a bombing, but just as bad. A bunch of Palestinian terrorists shot up the area in front of the ticket counters, IIRC, with machine guns and grenades. December 27, 1985. Sixteen people died. Abu Nidal was sentenced in absentia to life in prison.

In which minutes later on the same day, a similar incident also took place at VIE.

Hmm Rome, you should be able to get a good deal on Alitalia

Having a ticket 4 1/2 months out on that airline would really give one something to fret about. :D

Tickets are on Delta, award seats. Of course, a ticket on any US airline is a risk these days. I'll do my fretting on the Delta boards. The next cruise ends in Athens where I see on the news they are rampaging in the streets.

BTW, we had just passed through the Rome airport in Nov. 1985, about a month before the shoot up. And we were on a cruise ship one day behind the Achille Lauro. That incident caused our ship to divert from it's stop in Tunisia.

is there nowhere in the world I can go that I don't have to worry about potential problems? Can't we all just get along???

For the millionth time can you just relax and enjoy? If you'd just take the effort to be more optimistic I'm sure you'd make the lives of yourself and everyone else's a lot better. ;)

Just goes to show that all the planning in the world can neither predict nor prevent the unexpected. So, do you spend countless hours stressing about something you have absolutely no control over, or do you enjoy your life? Hmmmm.
