I've been reading posts at cruisecritic, but figured I'd ask here...
Anyone had luck on under $60 one day rentals either from FLL to POM (or a location that shuttles to port) and/or POM-FLL?
Otherwise, what do you use for transportation to/from port?
We fly into FLL next Friday 12/12 and out on 12/15. Only need for basic transportation on Friday, but we have 8 - 10 hrs between disembarkment and flight out.
Any suggestions?
Go Shuttle FLL - POM is $21 pp
SAS - has not returned my call inquiring about price/reservation

Budget looks like your best option: $66 all in, and you can probably do better if you find a discount code. :)
You might try Tri-Rail (http://www.tri-rail.com/) on your return since you have so much time.
I recently was in the same situation as you. I used Thrifty rental car with the Orlando Magic Card discount code (do a google search) and the rate was around 50 dollars all in. Best thing about thrifty is that they provide a shuttle from their rental car lot to the port.
At the POM I had a reservation for thrifty and national and whatever bus came first I used (National does not have a shuttle but you can use Alamo). I hopped on the Alamo bus and walked down the street to National.

back in sep i had get from FLL cruise ship dock to PBI (Palm Beach Airport). Took a taxi from the dock to the Tri-rail station and then used the Tri-Rail up to Palm Beach station then transfered to a bus. only cost less than 30 for the 2 of us. im sure there was a shuttle to station..but we caught a cab.
im sure since you have so much time tri rail would be a good idea...and maybe save you a little bit of money. though im not sure how far to a station the Port is. and of course I don't know how willing you are to haul your bags around...or how much hassle you are willing go to save a few bucks. because im really cheap!

Using the Orlando Magic Card Code I was able to get a $30 after tax rate for Dollar (Promo ID OCVB) and Thrifty (Corp ID 004M001010) of a few hour rental between FLL-MIA. Both offer Free Shuttle to Port.
However, SAS Transportation, offers shuttles from FLL-POM for $15 pp - less time, less hassle. Use the aol email if you choose to book and get a prompt response.
For POM-FLL, Alamo, using AAA or Southwest Corp ID yields and under $40 1 way rental w/o drop off fees. This, too is for a compact/economy car.
Of course, ymmv depending on car availability, etc. but these were the best rates I found.

Excellent info. I found the cruisecritic boards to have less than stellar followup.

Last time I cruised out of Miami, I had a National car rental that I drove over from Ft Myers. I returned the car to an off-airport location which had a free shuttle to POM. Does anyone know whether they still offer this service?

I am returning to miami port in March, but flying out of FLL on my return home. I currently see $90 private car (4 people), as about the best option. Unfortuantly I have a 5:30pm flight..... So a couple of questions.
1. Any "better"/cheaper way to get to FLL from Miami port?
2. Is it advisable to hang out on the Ship as long as possible? Given nothing else to do?
3. Anything interesting for a family of four close to FLL? Thinking of checking the bags and finding something close to do, without dropping allot of $$$$.
4. Any suggestions welcome (Wife and 11/7 year olds), there is no Admirals club in FLL, so we can't kill an hour or two there.........

Yes - they share with Alamo, so if National doesn't offer the shuttle to the port, then hop on the Alamo one.

If you're looking to save money and waste time then (1) take your time getting off the ship, (2) look at my earlier posts and rent a car from MIA. Take the free shuttle from the port to the Miami Rental location. (3) Things to do: Hang out at the Ft Lauderdale beach, go shopping at Festival - it's a large flea market. Just give yourself enough time to get to the airport/return car and catch flight. The rental car return we used was on airport grounds so we didn't need to worry about catching a shuttle at FLL.

A 11 and 7 year old would probably enjoy the Miami Seaquarium, Monkey Jungle, or the Science Museum - these are all fairly near POM.
If you get to FLL airport and only have an hour to kill then an absolute must for that age group would be the very nearby Jaxon's Ice Cream parlor in Dania Beach, FL

If you have two hours to kill near the FLL airport and if your kids are interested in fishing or wildlife then next to a huge Bass Pro warehouse is the Fishing Hall of Fame Museum.

If you want to catch a delicious bite before you leave FLL, Lester's Diner is a good choice and only a few minutes away from the airport:
250 W State Road 84
Fort Lauderdale, FL 33315
Phone: (954) 525-5641
I couldn't find a website, but if you do a search on Google, you will see that many people give this place terrific reviews.
