Hertz - Hertz to compete with Zipcar

Acciording to today's print Wall St Journal, on Dec 16, Hertz will officially start a service to compete with Zipcar at about two dozen locations in NY, London, Paris, and the ever-popular Park Ridge, NJ.

In NYC, a $50 a year membership allows rentals at $10 an hour, including gas. A $125 annual membership reduces the hourly cost to $8.50.

The Zipcar model will be followed, users won't have contact with a rental office to do a transaction.

Hopefully, this will lower prices for users once it gets underway!

I'm a member of Streetcar (http://www.streetcar.co.uk), which is a Zipcar style scheme in the UK. Generally I use Streetcar for short rentals (1-8 hours), and Hertz for anything longer. Could be interesting to see what Hertz's UK offering is - that said, Hertz often seem to have no cars available, unlike Streetcar. And Streetcar's VW Golfs are rarely more than 12 months old - unlike Hertz's fleet these days.....

For those who are interested, Connect by Hertz (http://www.connectbyhertz.com) have 8 London locations, 3 car types (Ford Fiesta, Ford Focus and Mini Cooper). Rates are £50 annual membership, and then between £3.95 and £6.95 per hour. Daily rates between £31.60 and £55.60.

Bit limited for my purposes at the moment, certainly compared to Streetcar's 700+ locations. But will be interesting to keep an eye on this and see where the model goes.

zipcar has dirty cars. my companies 2k$+/mont business is now scattred with hertz catching some of it.

Has anyone tried accessing the connectbyhertz.com website? Seems like a mess, getting Runtime Errors and such.

I joined the other day, already received my card. took a drive today. worked perfectly. The best part, they called me in the car to ask if I had any question and to welcome me to Connect by Hertz. I'm a fan!;)

Well you got very lucky then! I have had issues with the website and over the phone requesting basic information.

Any news or inside info on when this might be coming to Canada (since we have zipcars too)?

Zip car is cheap for few hours to a day. After that, Hertz is far cheaper.

Hi Shuttle-Bored, how did you get this offer out of interest (email or...)? I'd be interested/tempted/would sign up for such an offer if I had it, but, curious how you managed it!

Came through by e-mail overnight. Unsurprisingly, signing up doesn't work due to a problem in their payments system :rolleyes:

Signed up for this a couple of days ago. The UK website said I had to have a UK drivers license but I signed up anyway with my US drivers license and somebody from ConnectbyHertz called me the next day asking me to fax/email a copy of my DL and utility bill (proof of UK address). Did so and they signed me up immediately.
