Midwest - Detroit area hotel/motel recommendations?

I'm going to be in Detroit briefly in January and was looking for a hotel/motel recommendations (or ones to avoid). I'll need a place for the night of January 13th.

For me, it needs to be safe and clean and not WAY far away from Cobo Center and not all the way in Canada. It need not be fancy (chains like La Quinta, Ramada Inn, Best Western, Holiday Inn Express, etc. are fine) but I'm wary of say, Motel 6. I'd prefer it be <$120/night.

I'm totally unfamiliar w/the Detroit area but at least have a rough idea of the distances via Expedia. I plan to go to the industry preview day of the auto show the morning of January 14th and fly out that evening.

Some hotels seem cheap and close to Cabo like Milner Hotel but some of the bad reviews at http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g42139-d89995-Reviews-Milner_Hotel-Detroit_Michigan.html are a bit scary.

There now are plenty of good hotels in the downtown area including the Marriott at the Ren Cen, a Court Yard by Marriott and a "new" Doubletree ..... rooms may be hard to come by because the auto show typically draws about 6,000 reporters.

One alternative would be to stay out by Detroit Metro or in Dearborn.

If you want to be close to Cobo, try bidding on Priceline for the Marriott Ren Cen. It may not be available because of the auto show, but you can always try. That hotel often goes for well below $100 per night on PL. Windsor would be closer to Cobo than staying out in the burbs, but if that is not an option the closest chains would be in Dearborn, Warren, Southfield, or Troy.

With the new casinos there are a lot more rooms available downtown. There are also some great options if you look in Farmington Hills, Southfield, Royal Oak, etc.

Marriott at the Ren Cen is nice as is the new Westin Cadillac downtown. The Westin at the airport is very nice, but a bit further out.

The Detroit Marriott at the Renaissance Center on Expediia comes up at $339/night! The Courtyard By Marriott Detroit Downtown is even worse at $389/night! I'm not sure which Doubletree you're referring to, but Doubletree Guest Suites Fort Shelby/Detroit Downtown shows no rooms available.

There is a Doubletree Hotel Dearborn, but it's $228 - $269/night.

All of these are a lot more than I want to spend. :(

Hmm, the Westin Book Cadillac is coming up at $339/night and the Detroit Metro Airport one is $279/night.

Uhh... these are also out of my price range. :(

edit: Woohoo! I used Priceline and was able to get Detroit Marriott At The Renaissance Center for $85/night + tax and fees = $103.81. Maybe I overpaid but that's a hell of a lot better than staying in a sketchy place for about the same $ or paying $339 for the same room.
