Just to share some statistics with you, was travelling in a group of 7 on KA HKG-TPE-HKG last week. Everybody booked their own tickets on a seperate PNR. Y class was more than 97% full on both flights.

HKG-TPE (Plane upgauged to a 3 class plane, forgot what type)
Success Rate = 57.1%

Pax #1 (Me): JL Sapphire, C Tix, UPG to F ^^
Pax #2: CX GO, Y Tix, UPG to J
Pax #3: CX SL, Y Tix, UPG to J
Pax #4: CX SL, Y Tix, UPG to J
Pax #5 & #6 CX SL & CX AM, Y Tix, No UPG
Pax #7: CX GR, Y Tix, No UPG

TPE-HKG (New Airbus 2-Class)
Success Rate = 100%

Pax #1 (Me): JL Sapphire, C Tix, No UPG since its J anyways.
Pax #2: CX GO, Y Tix, UPG to J
Pax #3: CX SL, Y Tix, UPG to J
Pax #4: CX SL, Y Tix, UPG to J
Pax #5 & #6 CX SL & CX AM, Y Tix, UPG to J

Can you share the flight number?

My experience is KA486 being 8:15 in the morning is rarely full so less chance of an opup except during long weekends where there are many tourists with discount Y.

KA480 and KA482 has lots of pax connecting from other KA flights from the Mainland, mostly Taiwanese business men returning home. Being CX GO my chance of an opup is very high. In fact I remember is something like 6 or 7 out of 10 times. :)

Never taken KA488.

Will be going to TPE next week, this time on CX though. Will post on whether I get upgraded on either sector. I think, the chance is probably better for the inbound leg to HKG as I will be taking the night flight from TPE on Sunday. Got a pretty good package deal on cxholidays.com, esp. with the reduction in fuel surcharge coming into effect starting Monday.

This is also my first flight as CXGO, so, I will also see if the claims that passengers are upgraded once they reach the next tier are true after all.

i think..these two flights are very good to be on if you look forward to getting an op-up. And if you are luck you might get the new biz seats (KA)

What are these new style J seats like? I hadn't heard of them before, and there are no pictures of them on the KA website. I assume we are referring to the ones on a Type 3 A330

Type 3 (33L) KA J seats are essentially the same as old CX long-haul J seats, i.e. angled lie-flat seats. The design and functions available are also very similar, except that there is no AVOD.

As far as I know, 33L are usually deployed to Dhaka and Bangalore, but they do operate on some shorter routes, e.g. Taipei and (currently) Hangzhou, subject to aircraft swap of course.

Last year I was supposed to fly on 33A (Type 2) to TPE. At the end the outbound was swapped to 321 :td: and inbound was swapped to 33L ^. I have seen reports of it once being swapped to 33B as well (operated by CX crew)!
