California - Big delays in SAN today (December 1, 2008)

Overnight fog kept the airlines from getting planes to SAN. UA has only 3 of 8 planes required to fly this a.m. (my flight is thus far delayed by 2h15m) and WN has NO planes here this morning. The line of people waiting to check in at WN is the longest line I have ever seen at this airport. Fun day.

It's the start of the fog season. :( I live close to the water, and it was solid white outside my windows last night.
I have a morning flight in a couple days. Thanks for the heads up.

In OB, I couldn't see across the street the morning. NWS says tomorrow is worse:
SO THE NEXT FEW DAYS APPEAR LIKE THIS.
TUESDAY WILL BE COOLER WITH A DEEPER MARINE LAYER AND MORE
PERSISTENT LOW CLOUDS AND FOG NEAR THE COAST.
And I fly out at 6:15 tomorrow--or, more likely, not.

Sometimes the deeper marine layer actually makes it easier on flying. It sounds contradictory, but here's why. The fog itself is usually only about 1000-1200 feet thick. If the marine layer is shallow, that is only about 1000 feet thick, then the fog will be right down on the ground. On the other hand, if the marine layer is deep, say 3000 feet thick, then the clouds themselves will be at the top of the marine layer and the base of the 1000-foot thick cloud layer will be at 2000 feet above the ground. Under those circumstances, instrument approaches and departures are entirely possible and flights can operate quite reasonably, with perhaps only minor delays.

I was dumped at SFO by United on November 30th... they didn't offer any hotel vouchers or rental car assistance. Very disappointed - and this was at 1:00am too! Ended up driving to my final destination in the fog which cost me 250.00 :(
