Hello,
I need to meet up with a friend tomorrow before the MTR opens and would like to know if there is a bus or minibus that goes from University Station (anywhere within walking distance) that would take me to Wan Chai. I need to arrive in Wan Chai by 6AM and really don't want to spend the money on a taxi if I don't need to. Thanks!

I'm not an expert on the Shatin area, but I reckon your best bet might be to get a taxi into Shatin and then pick up route N182 (http://www.nwstbus.com.hk/routes/routeinfo.aspx?intLangID=1&searchtype=1&daytime=3&route=N182&routetype=N&company=5).

Yes, that's probably the best bet. You can tell the taxi driver to drop you off at the Regal Riverside Hotel (Stop #12 in the above link) or the Che Kung Miu (Temple) - Stop #16. Big landmarks close to the tunnel.
I am not sure, but I'd think there may be red public light buses (i.e. death machines) that goes on Tai Po Road (on the hill-side of the CU Campus) direct to Hong Kong Island. If you're brave enough... I am not.

Thanks for the replies. I spoke with a local friend who said the minibus running off the side of CU campus is the cheapest ($21 or 25 depending on when you get off). Hope I don't die ;)

Well, good luck then. I lived in HK for 17 years and have visited numerous times for the next 20; but I don't think I have stepped onto a "red van" since a very very young child in the mid-70's. I will take any kind of transportation in HK, including the NP360 cable car ;) but not a red van unless there's no alternative. [I have even ridden on the back of converted trucks (they call them lorries there) in some remote villages in the N.T.]
Ma On Shan bus terminus has route N680 that goes to North Point, Causeway Bay, Wanchai and Central. IIRC, pretty much all public transportation options at University Station shut down when the station closes. You may have to take a taxi from University Station to MOS, which will cost around 25 to 30 plus 25.6 for the N680 bus fare.
At least it's not a suicide van. :D

I'm happy to report back that I'm still alive.
I ended up taking a minibus down to Mong Kok then another one from Mong Kok to Wan Chai. University to Mong Kok was $12 and Mong Kok to Wan Chai was $10.
The destinations were all written in Chinese so I had to flag down the minibuses to ask them if they were headed to Wan Chai. The minibuses drove past the university every couple minutes at 4AM in the morning. It took about an hour to get to Wan Chai.

You mean that cable car actually MOVES? I thought it was a huge stationary public sculpture.

Sure, they move most of the time, and they occasionally fall. :p
