Amazon has the 160 gb/ 6 cell aspire for $379 with free shipping. Is that a good deal? I've been tempted to get one of these, without really knowing a lot about them. Advice, please.

Yes, good deal if you don't pay sales tax

Normal price is about $449 for that model, though some Costco stores had the 6 cell/160 for as low as $349 (all gone).

I'm thinking about putting in a 320 gig hard drive and, while I'm inside the case, expanding RAM to 1.5 gig. I plan to use it primarily for "bare essential" office function -- Word, Outlook, etc. and viewing movies on the plane.

Looks good to me. I got mine (6 cell, 160 hd) for $379 plus tax at MicroCenter in NE Atlanta last Friday. I LOVE THIS MACHINE! Hope you do too.

Tax for NY, but no bother - I ordered one too. My wife wants it so now I have to decide if I need to buy a second one or not.

Anyone know the spec on which DIMM I need to buy for the memory upgrade?

ETA: Here's the memory part from Crucial. (http://www.crucial.com/store/mpartspecs.aspx?mtbpoid=46DA43B9A5CA7304)

Why is a Sony TT $2,000 more than this machine?

I find you can get memory much cheaper on eBay than crucial. Crucial is good for finding what DIMM one needs.

optical drive, wwan, carbon fiber, led screen, 8 hr battery, duo core processor, vista or xp OS, plus if you want to spend even more money ssd drives and blue-ray. And of course the name.

For a $20 part (including shipping) I'll go with a real brand name and real warranty rather than pay $15 on eBay and having to deal with who knows what should anything go bad.

For comparison, TigerDirect (http://www.tigerdirect.com/applications/searchtools/item-Details.asp?EdpNo=4323364&sku=A180-15000%20DLINK&cm_re=Homepage-_-Spot%2002-_-Laptops_A180-8003) has a weekend deal on Acer Aspire + router.

No, it is for a regular Aspire, not the Aspire One this thread is about.

My bad. Just curious.....I've been looking at an HP mini and would be happy with a few gigs of flash memory. Why do you need so much memory?

I had a Horizon Air cap throw my carryon with an SLR down the steps once. I pefer durability of flash.

The extra HD space is used for holding copies of movies, tv shows pictures, music or other media on the netbook for entertainment purposes.

As for baggage handlers throwing them around, that's why you don't check bags with electronics in them. If forced to check the bag the electronics come out before the handlers get anywhere near the bag.

.....As for baggage handlers throwing them around, that's why you don't check bags with electronics in them. If forced to check the bag the electronics come out before the handlers get anywhere near the bag.Now I did say carryon. I was flying on a Horizon Beechcraft twin front right and there wasn't a seat in front to stash my carryon with an Olympus E-500 and two lenses. Cap said he'd have to stow it for the flight. When we landed, he took it out, looked my way, looked down the steps, and then threw it to the handler. There was a loud CLUNK, and I said G-dammit!. It was a real Napoleon Dynamite move. All I could think was Homeland Security, and was not wanting to stir a rukkus by getting in the nerd's face. I'm 6-5, 250. So I just walked away thinking when you fly Horizon Air, you get what you pay for. Fortunately, Olympus makes a great camera, and it's still working fine.

Re: hard drive. After that experience, I would rather have a flash hard drive and one or more solid state external hard drives. You just can't trust anybody, especially yourself.

Well, mine has arrived. I love this thing! The screen is a bit small, but very usable -- bright and sharp. The touchpad is fine but, being no fan of touch pads, I got one of those tiny "leave it plugged in all the time" BlueTooth adapters so I can use it with my travel BlueTooth mouse. It's surprisingly fast -- at least as fast as my older Vaio 1.8 GHz Pentium M laptop. I have no trouble touchtyping at speed on the keyboard. The computer has a solid, rugged feel to it and, so far, has run everything I've loaded on it with aplomb. The wireless NIC is great -- this machine picks up everything in the neighborhood.

I'm also surprised -- I don't find XP Home as limiting as I thought that it would be.

All in all, the Aspire is a terrific little machine, a very usable substitute for a full-size laptop when you want to save weight and space.
