I'm confused by the award availability on this route. The ANA tool shows no Star Alliance award seats on any KIX-SPN flight for the next 3-4 months or so (yes, I checked--slow day at work). Yet the return flight SPN-KIX is wide open most of the time! What am I missing here?

This can have many reasons. OZ doesn't fly this route. You need to change planes in ICN or PUS.
I can see plenty of availability ICN-SPN in the first quarter of next year so I am not sure what the issue is.
Alternatively, you list NW as one of your memberships. They fly KIX-SPN direct and non-stop.

Bzzzt. OZ does fly the route as of December. I'm looking at OZ flights. They're available in one direction but not in the other. That's the perplexing part.

In Asiana Korean site, I can see award seats on ICN-KIX-SPN. So, I think that KIX-SPN seats are available.

Sorry, I just don't see the flight. Asiana Japan page doesn't have them in the schedules pages for December. Sabre and Gallileo don't show them at all in December. Maybe I am missing something?

If the flight exists, maybe the award problem has something to do with 5th freedom rights?

It's a thrice weekly flight starting 19 Dec, so you may be looking at the wrong days.

See: http://airlineroute.blogspot.com/2008/10/asiana-starts-ticket-sale-of-osaka.html

I would find it very odd if one could ticket SPN-KIX alone but couldn't ticket KIX-SPN alone. Shouldn't traffic rights work both ways if they work at all? Perhaps it's just a bug in the ANA tool.

I was indeed looking at early December so I didn't find it.

The OZ Japan website is selling tickets for this flight (OZ120), so it can't have anything to do with traffic rights. But OZ the KIX-SPN part of OZ 120 (ICN-KIX-SPN) is not showing up in any GDS at the moment. This is why you can see ICN-SPN award seats but not KIX-SPN award seats.
On the return, OZ119 shows up as SPN-KIX and again, this is why you can see award seats (strangely the flight is not returning to ICN does anybody knows where it goes?).

Once OZ has updated the GDS you should also see award seats on the ANA tool.

That makes sense. Thanks!

Hope they fix the problem soon. I could use a few days in the sun.
