Yes, check out the Australia forum here on FT for a lot of info about this. You can generally get the visa over the phone from United if your air ticket is from them, but under many circumstances they will charge you $25.

Yes, any TA can apply on your behalf for a tourist visa.
It is an electronic visa, no sticker or so required in your passport.

Can all be done on-line at http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/index.html

I seem to recall reading that there F passengers get these visas for free. Am I imagining this?

PS - Going next week LAXOGG maybe I'll see you again....

It's $20AUD thru the http://www.eta.immi.gov.au/index.html as noted above.
And that would be just over $13 USD at today's rate.

If you are going on personal travel, take a look at http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/showthread.php?t=682358 . Several flyertalkers will process your visa for free if you agree to "pass it forward" with another good dead elsewhere.

If you are a 1K, then UA waives the $20 AUD fee for the ETA.

Yes, in addition to 1K/GS, United will waive the fee for F or C passengers -- even those on award travel or confirmed upgraded travel (assuming the outbound has been upgraded before you apply for the visa).
