I have a CX ticket with the return leg SFO-BOM open. This ticket was issued last year and is due to expire end of Dec.

Recently I had to go through surgery in SF and have been advised by my doctor not to travel for another 2 months. I have been trying to get this ticket extended on medical grounds by 1 month but the CX BOM office (where it was originally issued) has not been able to do this. They say IATA regulations prevent them from extending any ticket beyond 1 year.

I am CX Gold Member. Is there anything I can do to save this ticket and have it extended for 30 days. I should be in a condition to travel by late January.

You might have a problem getting it extended, but if it is a 12 month open-dated ticket then it might well have a significant refund value. Explore than avenue also.

I understand from a friend that it is possible to extend a 12 month ticket for 1 month extra. They have advise me that they have done it and it's all about the right valid reason and of course with your status that helps. I suggest if you have a good travel agent who has good relations with the CX ticketing office, they would be able to get the job done for you.

Other then that, try a few different approaches to the ticketing office in BOM and see if you get lucky. It's not normal for them to do it, but it isnt impossible, i guess it's all about how much time your willing to waste in pushing for what you want.

It also depends on the rules of the particular fare basis of your ticket. Some would allow extensions based on medical conditions, some not. If not, then you'd have to just get a new ticket and refund the current one.
