There are a lot of problems with United's website....but this is driving me crazy. I have been using the site for many years and this just started a few weeks ago.
I can move around within the site....but I cannot change to another website.
It simply shows "connecting" and sits there until I get the MS "cannot locate.." message.
It does not happen with any other website.
I am using XP and IE.

United.bomb works okay for me. You may want to get the freeware CCleaner (google it) and use it clear your browser history, cache, cookies, etc.
Oh, and you mention you've been "using it for years" - are you going to www.united.com or www.ual.com?

How are you trying to get to the "other" websites? Are you clicking a link on the united.com site or from favorites or typing it in? If you close IE and then start it up again can you go to the site in question directly?

I can close IE and then not have any problems until I go back to United.
I am trying to use a link from favorites. Never tried to type it in..but I feel sure it would not work.
The only way to get out of the United site is to close IE.

United.com
I used CCleaner (as well as others).
Didn't help.
Is it possible that the United site is running some type of script that will not let me out???
I had the same problem last week. I ran Norton Disk Doctor a couple of days ago, which must have cleaned up something that was causing the problem since it's gone.

It hasn't ever worked well for me. Every time I log out I get a page error message. About 1/3 of the time trying to leave the page to go to another website something just spins and spins until I force a browser close, at which point I get a nasty "page in use, are you sure you want to close your browser" message.

Are you running Windows? If so, are you completely up to date with Windows Update?

silly question...
have you tried using firefox?
even with me as a mac user, safari and "the bomb" sometimes don't get along but firefox works like a champ.

This is exactly what I am experiencing. I just checked and I am getting the same problem on my laptop. The only common things with the desktop and the laptop is the internet connection.
I am updated with all Windows.
McAfee does a regular virus check.
I have not tried Firefox.
The newest twist is that I can't print from Itineraries.

It might be time to try Windows Restore if there is a valid restore point before the "few weeks ago" when this all started.

Try FireFox.

Also, try a repair of IE from the Add/Remove Programs menu. That sometimes fixes IE.
