I have a return booked with them, but wonder if it is possible to change it to one way for a change of plan?

Yes they do, but don't think you can amend return to one-way, but I may be wrong.

In general it is always better to book one-ways as there is no difference in cost. That way you are more flexible and can even change / cancel return after you travelled outbound.

In your case I would first try and book the one-way you want and once that is done cancel the return (25 pound fee per person). If no availibility for the one-way you want, you should indeed try and see if you can change return to a one-way, not sure it is possible.

Enjoy it while you can ... under Miles & More, a one-way costs 75% of the cost of a return!

If you've already flown your first sector you won't be able to change anything.

If you haven't flown yet, then they may insist you cancel and rebook in which case the seats that you still want might not get released back into award inventory. Bit of a lottery I'm afraid.

As suggested, booking 2 one ways is the best plan to avoid this in future (until we are assimilated into M&L that is).

thanks to all. I called them this morning, and I can choose which leg to cancel, as long as I let them know before my outbound flight. The will credit the unused miles back, but not the tax.

How do they justify keeping the tax????

I didnt understand that either, but they didnt charge me any fees for the change either, so maybe swings and roundabouts?

I'm pretty sure you're entitled to a refund of the taxes/charges (less the £20/£25 charge). You should contact the BMI Refunds department.

Keeping hold of the taxes is just downright cheeky

Here's my guess ....

The taxes on the return leg were b*gger all and came to less than the £20 change fee. BMI decided it wasn't worth the trouble charging you the extra couple of quid so decided to call it quits.

That's very unlikely on a longhaul itinerary with the fuel surcharge...

I've heard before that when you make changes to the itinerary they don't refund the difference in tax. The only way of getting all the taxes back is cancelling the ticket.

I guess it would be one of the many things you have to put up with, while enjoying the generosity of the program...

When I had to cancel a Lufthansa return award with bmi (and I also had to rebook one of the legs again afterwards), they offered me too not to refund the taxes. But I decided to cancel the whole award and rebook a new one way award for the same flight (as there was still space avaiable), in the end, this way it was cheaper for me.
