NAVTEQ's Air Travel Status enables navigation systems and applications to provide a detailed view of the air travel experience for hundreds of U.S.-based airports and thousands of flights.

Air Travel Status provides flight arrival and departure information for most domestic flights, as well as travel-related information for hundreds of U.S. airports -- including current weather conditions, overall delay status and average security line wait times.

It's not clear to me how various GPS devices would receive this information. Perhaps RDS? I have an external receiver for my Garmin that provides XM Weather for radar and satellite data on my GPS, so I'm thinking that the NAVTEQ ATS service would be delivered in a similar way.

However, GPS manufacturers would probably need to build these additional receivers into the devices themselves, as I'd probably want a single-device (no cord) setup for portability.

Anyone else know how this service would be implemented on a portable GPS? Any GPS device manufacturers have plans to implement this in current devices?

Nokia bought NavTeq last year. One of the + points made for this was Nokia would be able to provide services and apps over their entire range of devices, blah, blah, blah.

Educated guess is it starts there. Everyone else, i,e., the GPS manufacturers, would have to pay for this on top of the already high prices they pay for map data licensing.

I'm betting that the 2009 CES will be the start of connected GPS units from most major companies. Probably explains why Dash quit the market earlier this month :(

Having access to flight information on your GPS is pretty cool.
