A friend is hosting an event which I promised to attend.Today I bought tix for the Bette Midler Show for the night before.I go to book a room and ,,,,wha?Oh no!It's the CES weekend
So now I am going to have to book something less than wonderful(two rooms)at a price that is about what I would pay for a nice place.
So folks-the CES is 1/8-1/11 2009 and the Adult expo is running about the same time.
Not a good time to be in LV if you do not have to be.

Yeah, not the time you want to be here. At least it's not like what it used to be like with Comdex.

I know it is heresy for many on this board, but Hotwire is showing some great rates for 4* hotels during those dates... $59 on south strip and $66 on central strip.
Could be a reasonable alternative.
For the past several years, the show has always been midweek, this year they decided to make it a weekend show. With the downturn in the economy, it is possible that many exhibitors may pullout, this will free-up rooms that were previously booked. The post mentioning 4* hotels being available at reasonable rates may be a sign of this.
PS: The convention center being in close proximity to the Monorail stop, is one of the rare places where the Monorail gets you there more efficiently than the CAT bus.

You're assuming the show makes it a good time to be here.
My impression is that it's not really all that interesting other than as a chance to meet the porn stars. I will admit to having never been inside, though.

It makes for good odds of playing craps next to copious amounts of silicon on each side of you.

Pretty sure I wouldn't want to be inside any porn stars either.

I know Hotwire/Priceline are heretical here, but I did swing THEhotel on a Saturday night last month via Priceline for $125.
At that price, forget about the free buffets/freeplay/etc. for a one-night stay. I'll take a 5-star on the Strip on a Saturday night every single time.

You got Planet Hollywood at that price? If it is off the strip at the Westin Casuarina then I call it a wash.

Great deal ^. Suspect CES is hurting as well. Even their website is touting that rooms are being discounted this year. Or maybe just more people are going to the adult convention instead.

Agree. Westin is a nice hotel, but it's too far away for my liking. I avoid it unless I'm desperate for SPG stays (thank God not this year, good ole Sheraton Ontario Airport has been a frequent home for me lately!).
Order of hotels for my liking (can't afford Bellagio sadly, otherwise it's number one; same with THEhotel unless I get that Priceline rate):
-MGM Grand
-Mandalay
-PH
-NYNY
-MC
far drop off
-Luxor
-Excalibur
(As you can tell, I'm a South Strip guy).

Agree. Westin is a nice hotel, but it's too far away for my liking. Too far away from what? The Strip? It's closer to Bellagio than MGM is. The Convention Center? It's closer than all of the hotels you list.
I'm so confused. :D :D :D

Keep checking the rates -- as CES (or whatever event) approaches, if the rooms aren't filled, they'll drop the rates. I've seen very very good rates at top hotels (ok, well Venetian comes to mind) the week before for ~$150 or less.

Normally I would agree-but the Casurina on a Sat. night with two major conventions in town for $99?A steal!
I am not fond of this property-but can live with it at that price.
I am hoping Caesars drops its rates for 11/11(sunday)as I have a late night party there and I would prefer to just roll down the hall.

Did you check this site: http://www.cesweb.org/hotelTravel/hotel.asp
I once accidentally booked a LV trip during NAB. A quick visit to their website turned up a way to book one of their hotels as a 'non exhibitor/non attendee' (go figure) - and I got a 199/n room at the Venetian when the entire city was sold out.

Thanks for that link bocastephen-rates ARE being cut.
The only night I am really concerned about now is Friday night.
Have tix to see Bette Middler that night -slated now to be at the JW(not close at all but a great hote at a livable rate that includes breakfast for two)on a fully cancelable rate.

Just for giggles I looked on my Harrahs offers page-some decent but not great rates for Friday night.
So i put in my acct. info and stay info-SUPRISE!They actually offered to comp my friday night stay ^
I have a long history at this hotel(stayed there the first month they opened-pre Harrahs)and am a VERY lite player at Harrahs properties,so this was a shocker.
I am not worried about sunday night at all. Will either stay at the hotel the party will be at or the PH-$89 rate fully cancelable.

Sure wish the $99 rate for the Westin was for Friday night - 1/9/09. Compared to everything else that would be a great price.

Due to the economy, CES rates have dropped significantly this year. There are a lot of good rates south strip - but if you're actually going to be heading to CES, it'll be a transportation nightmare to get there. This is my first year in Vegas & my office is on Paradise near the Hughes Center & I come from the north side of town. During SEMA, it took me over an hour to get to work - I'm not looking forward to the CES traffic at all!

CES has a lot of shuttles running for attendees, so I think that helps alleviate traffic issues - plus, attendance will be way down this year. It's all the people who insist on driving to CES instead of taking the hotel <-> convention shuttles that clog things up. I think the traffic from SEMA could well have been worse in the valley just because of the lack of organized event transportation (this was a complaint from many attendees I talked to in past years).
Of course, it's prudent to avoid the area completely on big convention weekends. Over the past few years, I've tried to head the opposite direction of the crowds by taking vacations to other cities.

I don't know about "very lite players" but we have received a five night comp including that weekend. Some of the Harrahs properties do appear to have these dates blocked out, such as Caesar's, but others have availability. Use the website, go to my offers, put in dates/locations and see what you have. Hit "book it" and go to the next page to see if your comp will actually go through and give you a confirmation number. 72 hour cancellation policy. So book it now and if you get a better comp elsewhere then you have time to cxl.
