I just noticed this... all my USB ports are busy, so I connected my iphone to my mac with firewire... it won't synch! It powers up, but it won't synch!

I can't believe I've never noticed this... maybe there is something wrong with my setup?

MBP running Tiger (still), Itunes 8.

I just noticed this... all my USB ports are busy, so I connected my iphone to my mac with firewire... it won't synch! It powers up, but it won't synch!

starting with the 5th generation ipod in 2005 (ipod with video), firewire only charged the ipod. it no longer synced.

starting with the iphone 3g and the 4th generation ipod nano (the current models), firewire no longer charges or syncs. in other words, they are now usb only devices. however, the power adapter can source 1 amp (versus 500 ma from a usb port) so if you want to recharge it, it will be a little quicker with the power adapter.

the current ipod classic is basically the same as last years version so it will still charge over firewire. the ipod shuffle never supported firewire.

If you need to use firewire, you can use an adapter like this one:

Thanks guys. I have about six firewire chargers/cables from old iPods that are now useless.

Thanks a lot Jobs.

Firewire lost the connectivity war to USB even though Firewire is superior throughput wise. PC markeshare and money beat the better technology. Its happened before and will happen again.
