I'm posting this here, since I really think it is important and know that many of you/us use AVG as their virus software. This applies to the FREE and PAID AVG virus software.
DO NOT LET THE VIRUS SCAN RUN without doing this update!!
If you are an AVG user (7.5 or 8.0) you need to do an update right away. Yesterday an update that was released recognized a Windows XP system file (user.dll) as a virus and recommended deleting the file. If the file did get deleted you would not be able to boot up and have to do a restore. AVG has corrected the issue leading to the false positive and users should download the latest update.

Ok, not to sound like a dumb bunny here but my AVG update runs every day & I didn't get the the user.dll/virus/delete message. I'm on Vista. So does that mean if they corrected whatever the problem was and my update/scan is running today that I'm ok? Any input appreciated. Cheers.

I think the report from yesterday, showed an XP and VISTA vulnerability. But, todays update shows that VISTA might be spared. Could it BE, a VISTA ADVANTAGE?
I also think it also depends on what update one has running on the machine. I got like FOUR updates a few days ago during the day, that was odd. But, they could have corrected it earlier.
I still figured it was beneficial to users. I mean, who has MEDIA with them to repair files?

Hey I appreciate the heads-up! And LOL who knew that for once Vista might be ok. I've got 7.5 running. I had a few updates the other day too, and also thought it was odd. I'm probably switching to NORD (NOR?) before year-end, not related to this but need another anti-virus & that one seems to be getting pretty good reviews by FTers on this forum.
Note to self: when getting a big virus catch such as .dll, open up another window & find out if it's accurate before deleting & causing havoc. Those that know me know that if I can't figure out how to put memory in my laptop or whether having itunes is needed for my computer know I'm not going to be Miss Handy when it comes to a system restore.
Cheers.

I think you mean NOD32 (http://www.eset.com).
And yes, it's excellent :D

Thus proving my point. If I can't get the name right I probably wouldn't be too good on a system restore :D
Cheers.
FWIW, this only affects some versions of XP. Most notably, not all SP levels are affected. I think SP2 might be and SP3 is not, but I haven't confirmed that yet.
