Circuit City stores filed for Ch11. Saw news on yahoo today and had thought I heard something.
Last night, however, I spent $800 plus on the AAdvantage mall to buy my mom a flat screen TV and myself a digital camera. Everything is to ship within a week or so and some AA miles x4 will post to my AA account.
Or will this happen?
Anyone have thoughts on this stuff?
Forgive me if there's another thread somewhere. My initial search found nothing.

The fact that it is under Ch11 doesn't change a thing. The whole transaction will go thru.
The only difference I can think is that the transaction would have the implicit approval of the bankruptcy court (which doesn't change a thing as far as you're concerned).
The bankruptcy court could in theory cancel your transaction - but I think that you are more likely to see an asteroid land in your garden than from that occuring (the bankruptcy has many other stuff to deal with).
PS: if they sold you a million dollar worth of goods at 10% of its market value than, that would be another story, the court would be much more likely to cancel the transaction since you would take weath away from the firm, and reduce the wealth left for the other claimholders.

If you registered for the AA promotion with the $25 Mastercard gift card as well (and are afraid you might not get the miles and hence the credit card), Sears, Staples, or Tiger Direct may be alternatives.
Operationally, there shouldn't be any problem but the company may look at their affiliation arrangements as a result of bankruptcy.

Suppose you want to return your purchase. You would not have any right to do so, no matter what the store policy pre BK might have been.
If it were me, I'd cancel the order and get my money back, using billing error dispute procedure if need be.

Not necessarily true. The purchase transaction may go through. But certain other contracts may not remain, such as mileage deals, gift cards, and other various contracts. On the other hand, they might. Who knows what are in the first day emergency operating orders. Someone knows. But we don't.

All posts appreciated. I am going to try not to worry just yet.
So far I am going to actually wait and see what happens. We already go by the theory that once you buy something, only the manufacturer's warrantee at the minimum available for the normal free length of time is all that we would ever have on the TV, so if something goes wrong with it, we do not need the store. And the camera? Well, they only last a year or two anyway before 2 year olds, snow, water and beach sand render them useless, as well as the fact that cameras, like computer software, do change every year.
If these purchases do not go thru--and despite the mile gains on AA mall use, they were far cheaper here than in any other store we found--then I will dispute it with Citi. If they do go thru but no miles come, I still gain becuase like I said, the savings outweighs the mileage gain (800x4 miles to come)
I will report back here when the products come (if they do next week) and on any mile stuff later. I did not know about the $25 mc gc promo (oh well) but I will be ordering more on the mall anyway.
Editied: I discovered that I may have qualified for the promo on the $25 by spending over 500. Will see.

...I find it hard to believe that your purchase really was an actual good deal.
I, too, have been shopping for a "bedroom TV" (32 or 37 inch LCD) during the past 2 or 3 months - - looking at various "bargains" between $400 and $700 - - mostly on eBay but keeping an eye on Froogle and other online shopping comparison sources.
The Circuit City stores in my metro area were among those announced as CLOSING a few days before the bankruptcy declaration and I went looking at their liquidation inventory - - I didn't see anything that couldn't be had on eBay (shipping included) for at least 10% cheaper.
And as fate would have it, the very next day, I got some kind of e-mail announcement alerting me to a deal that did make me pull the trigger. $369 for a 32" (720p) Westinghouse WITH a DVD player built in - - from PCConnection.Com (which seems 100% _not_ shady, as a retailer to me) - - and NO sales tex and FREE shipping.
So, anyhow, I hope you are happy with your purchase.
With the current retail climate, I suspect that yesterday's $700 TV (or any other electronic gadget) will be mid-December's $350 fire sale - - all over the place.
Best wishes,
Rex, in Indiana.

perhaps you are right but Sony was the brand of choice so we were willing to pay for it. It matches another TV in the house and we were ok with the price.
I also think despite ch11 in Circuit City stores, the entity that ships these is not closing any time soon so that will continue to do its thing. Subsequently, I think the mileage gig associated with such an entity will also continue. We shall see. glad you found a tv deal on your end.

I recently got a TV via eBay, using the Microsoft Cashback offer (30% off at the time). This seemed way better than the various rewards offers (plus I got 1 mile/$ for using a credit card).

I am not worried like I may have been when I first typed this thread. once the camera arrives (probably this week as it is coming by regular post and is still in transit) the miles are all to wait for. I think those may have been 'dealt with' between the airline and merchant well in advance and are just waiting to be used by customers like me. The guy who buys from this store in a few months from now is the one who may need to worry.

No, the miles are most likely nowhere near on their way yet. I don't know where this happens (but I would guess as likely the store as anywhere else), but the primary reason that mall miles tend to take way longer (months) than most other kinds of partner miles is because they're for returnable pruchases, and they wait to see whether you're going to return them or not (what's the return time lmit in this case?) before they even start the process of sending the miles.
So for the miles, it's not good enough for the store to stay around just long enough to ship you the product, it has to stay around (and in the partner relationship) at least a couple months past that.
(Remember, also, unlike most other kinds of partner activities, qualifying mall purchases are impossible to prove to the airline if the store is not around, because it's not sufficient to have bought the product and paid for it, you have to have entered the store through the mall portal, and there's generally no evidence avaiable for you to archive at purchase time that you did that successfully. Only the computers at the store's website know...)
I also have some doubts as to whether Circuit City itself bought the miles from AA. It's fishy how identical every airline and hotel chain's mall participants are. I suspect the way that Rewards Network implements dining programs for all airlines (and one hotel chain), there may be just a single airline miles/hotel points shopping mall providor that goes in the middle. They may be the ones who bought miles, and they may be treating it with each merchant as a "real money" transaction. That could be bad news if Circuit City is told by the bankrupcy court that these kinds of payments are low priority...

you are actually right but I think I will get them because the one entity that seems to remain in tact with circ city is the place that ships things. Hopefully that generates the bonus.

Neither of us knows what price level was either item. My guess was that the TV was $650-700 and the camera was $100-150.
The OP has now provided the additional info that he was set on buying a Sony. If he got what he wanted, and having that specific brand preference is/was important to him, then any argument about lower price alternatives is moot.
I was trying to get at the (un)importance - - to SOME people... not all - - of making sure that a bargain is really a bargain when the side issue of accruing FF miles is under consideration.

Even if something happens and you don't get the miles the most important thing is that you are pleased with your purchases and received what you thought you were getting. The loss of 3200 miles would not be welcome news but it wouldn't be the end of the world.^

true, although as we speak the camera is still MIA. Circuit City is telling me the USPS is horrid with tracking and they opened a case number saying if it does not arrive by 11/25 to contact them. I believe them, and expect it to come soon but it's a bit of a bummer.
As for miles, yes, you are correct. I just hope that if I do not get them, it's because of the ch11 and not due to some NWA-styled mall glitch that happens a lot over there where things don't post! With AA they do, UA has had its share of probs but NWA had been my worst as of late.

Camera failed to show up!
Lost in transit.
USPS cant find it, nor can CC.
CC gave me a case number last week.
Tonight the date of newly expected arrival came and went.
New CSR at CC told me the case number I had did nothing. He researched, and requested they just send me a new camera. I have new case number but have to wait til next week to even see the results of this request.
I need it but can wait a bit longer. Will see what happens but if it does not work out next week, I will demand a credit to go pick one up in the store as there is one near us that has them for same price (so I still get the bonus miles by keeping the charge on my card :D)

update...
Circ City left me a voicemail the other nite with a specific extension to call. Seems the USPS lost my camera so they told me they'd issue a refund on that item since they actually no longer keep it in stock!
I called today and when deciding to just order a different cam, the manager understood I had been inconvenienced and said to call him back right after I place an order and give him the order number. At that point he would issue me a credit to adjust to the price of the one I had ordered. It was cheaper by at least $40-50 than what I got now. This time I did store pick up option and so the newer camera is now ordered and ready to go get.
the good news is that they refunded a mastercard to which I earn AA miles but the new one I used to charge this new camera up is a citi card that actually needed the $750 spending to get 25,000 AA mile bonus anyway, so buying a new camera on it brings me closer to what I will spend on it anyway.
This time I ordered the new cam thru the NWA mall using my Citi AA card.
Will see if all miles--from original TV only purchase--and this new one--come thru in all accts.

01DEC2008 WorldPerks Bonus Miles Circuit City 860
I had made a big purchase thru the AA mall for the camera and TV but the camera was unavailable so it got canceled out. I then bought a new from same store thru the NWA mall and everything did ship ok.
The above mileage has posted in my NWA acct with bonus added for the camera purchase as I'd hoped for.
The TV purchase, however, was done a bit earlier and it was done thru the AA mall. To date nothing has gone thru. I have recently asked them to look into what should amount to just around 2,000 miles.
Circuit City is no longer on their list of mechants of course.

I hope they do.
To prod them along, there's a customer service link on the advantage link and you can go in there to report a missing miles thing. Now, circuit city is no longer on the list and while you can choose "OTHER" in one pull down menu, the second part of the process requires that all fields are filled in so you have to put in something and the "OTHER" option is for some reason not in there! (bad design of site)
I just picked like Staples and then i my short description of the problem I had, I said in bold: I PICKED STAPLES BECAUSE YOUR OPTIONS NO LONGER INCLUDE CIRCUIT CITY and then went on to outline my missing miels WITH order number, which I hope you still have for your purchase.
good luck!
