Gang,
We are going to be in Vegas Nov 25 - Nov 28th....
Thinking about doing something different ... stay Downtown instead of on the Strip.
If we did that, what hotels would you recommend?
Do not know downtown... so thought we might give it a try.
Thanks,
William

If you want to pretend you're in Hawai`i, stay at the California (http://www.thecal.com/).
Choke Hawai`i-kine guys. Good grindz for kaukau in the snack bars and restaurants.

I stayed at the 4 Queens in February of this year. It was ok. Nothing special. Of course, I wasn't looking for anything special.
The Golden Nugget looked like a place to check out if I go again. I suspect that Binion's and the Fremont could also fall into the nothing special category. I can't tell you anything one way or the other about the Plaza or Main Street Station.
Some downtown places that screamed "avoid my hotel rooms, please":
• Golden Gate (the casino seemed grungy)
• El Cortez (the casino had, um, ah, ambience--exactly what I had pictured "Old Vegas" to be)
• Gold Spike (more "Old Vegas")
In any case, if you like to go to sleep early, make sure to request rooms away from the Fremont Street Experience. Otherwise, have fun. I loved downtown Vegas.

The only place I would consider is the Golden Nugget.
I agree, the GN is the best...but note my post about the noise downtown.
If going downtown stay at the Golden Nugget.
I have stayed there two or three times and have not had a problem with the noise.
I saw a cheap rate for the El Cortez a week ago and thought about it until I went to their website and saw that they have rooms called "Vintage Rooms" - they are all smoking and right above the casino floor.

Golden Nugget is "Strip-Style Vegas." Las Vegas Club, Plaza, and El Cortez are "Old Vegas" and perfectly acceptable. A nice medium property is Binion's Horseshoe.

Isn't that where they have ox tail soup after 11 pm? Yum!

I've never stayed at Main Street Station, but it is one of my favorite places to play (I play video poker) and I've heard the rooms are actually not bad for the price.

They're fun but I don't think I've ever won more than $2.00 on them, lol.

I stay at Binion's every time. You must ask to stay in the tower, not the older original property. The tower is the one with a steakhouse, a pool and 28 or so floors. They have ample parking and when the elevator works it's convenient too. :-)

I once got $5. From my reaction, I think people thought I had hit Megabucks.
