Hello:
I ordered "Hindu Veg" for an EWR-MAD-EWR itinerary in Y. Going out, the food was great (Indian veggie food). Coming back, I was served fish in the meal as well as snack. Couldnt eat it, since fish is not vegetarian for me.
Wrote to CO. They replied that even though fish is "suggested to be prohibited" in a hindu meal, it may not be the case. They said I should order the "strict vegetarian" option from now on.
I dont understand why they cant say what is exactly prohibited and what is not. For example Pork and Beef is also "suggested to be prohibited" in a Hindu meal. Does this mean, they can serve those items if they want?

Has anyone any thoughts on this issue?
I am fed-up with CO meal choices.
Of course, I am one of those who choose the "cereal" option in F !!
Thank God for cereal!

Too bad you didn't go to the Continental Website, under Travel Information, Special Travel Needs before you ordered your special meals.

Hindu meal: CO Hindu meals follow vegetarian guides by excluding meat and meat derivatives.

Vegan meal: exclude all food derived from animals from their diets including meat, poultry, fish, shellfish, honey, eggs and dairy products.

Fish in a vegetarian meal would come as a surprise to me too.

Is fish in a vegetarian meal a common possibility on other airlines too?

I've never seen fish in a vegetarian meal (I have seen yogurt with gelatin). But a Hindu vegetarian meal is different in that not all Hindus refrain from eating fish. Singapore Airlines is another that typically serves fish in its Hindu veg meals.

The OP could have been more proactive but CO's response was, well irresponsible. Apparently the airline has no idea, nor it bothered to find out what vegetarian means to a Hindu.

Indian (not just Hindu, but Jain and Sikh too) vegetarians certainly refrain from eating fish. A hindu vegetarian would not eat chicken, or eggs either. Some people refrain from onions and garlic also. Even non-vegetarians are likely to refrain from beef.
