Are there any supermarkets near the airport or within walking distance of a MARTA rail station? If another station, how about near downtown or between downtown and the airport? Nicer supermarket preferred over old and dirty one or one in a high crime rate area.

Been a few years since I frequented the area, but there appears to be a Publix right around the corner from the Midtown MARTA station (10th & W Peachtree):
Google Map (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&hl=en&geocode=&q=grocery+store+ansley+park,+ga&sll=33.792558,-84.427528&sspn=0.107566,0.249596&ie=UTF8&ll=33.784961,-84.385772&spn=0.013447,0.031199&z=15&iwloc=B&layer=c&cbll=33.781385,-84.387782&panoid=rydNOBft4WBO542RtkMSKQ)

Given the proximity to the north ave trade school (http://www.gatech.edu/) ;), the area will likely be not run-down and popular with a large number of college students.

There is a Publix near the Brookhaven station, right on Peachtree street.

The Publix mentioned near the Midtown MARTA station (20 minute MARTA ride from Airport station) is probably your best bet given your preferences -- it's part of a luxury condo building called the Plaza Midtown. If you have a bit more time to spare before/after grocery shopping, you could also check out nearby Tech Square (http://www.gatech.edu/technology-square/) (between Williams and W. Peachtree on 5th Ave which has the GT hotel/conference center, business school, and bookstore/Starbucks, as well as a few shops.

There is a free bus (the Tech Trolley) that goes between the Midtown MARTA Station and Tech Square (and the main GT campus), though there is no stop at the Publix. Check out a real-time map of buses here (http://www.nextbus.com/predictor/publicMap.shtml?a=georgia-tech). (Click on "Routes..." and select "Tech Trolley".) If you're taking the bus from Midtown MARTA, make sure to exit from the Peachtree Place side (or just follow the students).

Feel free to PM me if you have any questions.

There is a Publix near the Brookhaven station, right on Peachtree street.

You're probably thinking of the Kroger and it's a couple of blocks down. Publix is closer to Lenox and a bit of a walk from Brookhaven. (I used to live literally across the street from the Brookhaven Station and now live maybe 3 miles from it)

I would agree that the Publix near midtown station is your best bet. It's a nice one and not a scary area.

I wouldn't want to walk around in the Ashby neighborhood, especially at night.
